Position: Seasonal Zoo Camp Counselor

DESCRIPTION
This position plays a vital role in providing support during peak visitor seasons and educational programming. They ensure a positive experience for zoo visitors while supporting the educational operations of the zoo. This temporary position offers an opportunity to work in a dynamic environment, interact with diverse animal species, and contribute to the mission of wildlife conservation and education.
QUALIFICATIONS
· High school diploma or equivalent is required. Additional education or coursework in biology, zoology, or related fields is preferred.
· Previous customer service or hospitality experience is preferred.
· Experience working with children, especially in a school or summer camp setting, is a plus.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
· Knowledge of basic zoology, biology, and zoo-oriented conservation programs.
· Skill in excellent interpersonal communication, with the ability to interact courteously and effectively with diverse groups of visitors.
· Skill in making presentations before large or small groups.
· Skill in handling ambassador animals and basic animal care.
· Ability to maintain a strong attention to detail and the ability to perform tasks accurately and efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
· Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team to accomplish shared goals.
· Ability to stand for extended periods, walk long distances, and work outdoors in various weather conditions.
· Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and perform manual labor tasks as needed.
MAJOR DUTIES
· Assists Education Specialist in planning, developing, and teaching education programs.
· Assists Education Specialist to conduct in-service workshops for area teachers to promote zoo education and acquaint teachers with ways to utilize the zoo as an adjunct, supplemental teaching facility in areas of environment and natural history education.
· Provides educational zoo tours to promote the zoo, conservation, and other environmental items. Information provided during tours is to be timely, accurate, and appropriate for the audience.
· Assists Education Specialist in planning and executing special events at the Zoo, including organizing and promoting the events.
· Provides basic animal care for the education animal collection.
· Greets visitors, provides information about zoo exhibits, programs, and events, and assists with wayfinding to enhance the visitor experience.
· Monitors visitor behavior and enforces zoo rules and safety guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all guests.
· Responds to guest inquiries, concerns, and emergencies promptly and courteously, and escalates issues to zoo management as needed.
· Assists with special events, educational programs, and outreach activities by providing logistical support, staffing information booths, and facilitating guest interactions.
· Other duties as assigned.
