Description
Performs responsible work enforcing water safety rules and regulations, rescuing distressed or drowning swimmers, taking appropriate first aid action and maintaining equipment. Performs necessary maintenance tasks in order to continually maintain a safe and healthy environment. Work is performed under the supervision of the Pool Manager and/or Head Lifeguard.
Retention bonus of up $350 possible for all aquatic hires up until July 8th 2025. Details will be provided.
Essential Duties
- Adheres to Lynchburg City Parks and Recreation Department policies and procedures.
- Provides a safe swimming environment for all participants while enforcing all pool rules and regulations.
- Demonstrates thorough knowledge of aquatic safety principles, rules, regulations, and emergency action plans with the ability to perform them.
- Demonstrates good public relations when dealing with patrons, the general public and other city employees.
- Reports any problems, potential situations, and/or disturbances immediately to the supervisor on duty.
- Demonstrates thorough knowledge of aquatic safety principles, rules, regulations, and emergency action plans with the ability to perform them.

Performs related duties as assigned including, but not limited to:
- Effectively rescuing victims in need of assistance
- Administering First Aid and/or CPR as needed
- Activating and administering the emergency action response plan
- Performing assigned maintenance duties
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly/routinely required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or effectively communicate. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Work environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is routinely exposed to outside weather conditions and extreme heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The noise level in the work environment can be loud. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to pool chemicals.

Minimum Education and Experience Required
Must be at least 15 years of age
Additional Requirements
Valid certification in American Red Cross Lifeguard Training or equivalent
Valid certification in American Red Cross Standard First Aid and CPR
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities- Ability to recognize safety concerns;
