The City of Lynden is seeking a Temporary Part-Time Accounting Technician to join our team for a six-month term, approximately April 15 – October 15. This position is for 25 hours per week, with a schedule to be determined based on availability and department needs.
As part of the Finance team, the Accounting Technician performs a variety of routine technical accounting and administrative functions in maintaining the fiscal records of the City.Essential Duties and Responsibilities:Prepares, reviews, enters, reconciles, and analyzes financial and accounting data, including generating reports. Prepares and posts financial data to financial systems according to generally accepted accounting procedures. Ensures compliance with state, federal, and City of Lynden regulations, ordinances, and policies related to finance and accounting. Provides administrative and financial support to accounting and finance staff while delivering high-quality customer service to internal and external clients and members of the public.
Identifies and resolves billing, collection, payment, and refunding issues, collaborating with customers to address concerns. Collects and analyzes data from various systems and resources, coordinating efforts for resolution. Reviews accounting and finance procedures and recommends process improvements. Assists in preparing reports, presentations, correspondence, and policy and procedure manuals.Minimum Qualifications:Education and Experience
- Associate degree or technical certification in accounting, bookkeeping, or related field and three (3) years of related experience; OR
- An equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the necessary qualifications may be considered.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Accounting and Bookkeeping practices with emphasis on Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Utility Billing, General Ledger, and Payroll processes. Municipal Government experience is an asset.
- Computerized financial systems, including Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel) and financial accounting software.
- Modern records management techniques.
- Administrative and clerical procedures such as file management, form design, and general office operations.
- Analyze accounting data, systems, and issues to recommend and implement solutions.
- Plan, organize, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Manage multiple interruptions and shift priorities effectively.
- Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws, and regulations.
- Prepare reports, correspondence, and budget estimates using proper grammar, punctuation, and formatting.
- Apply logical and mathematical principles to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Utilize Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) proficiently.
- Communicate clearly and professionally, both verbally and in writing.
- Work independently with minimal supervision and manage multiple tasks effectively.
- Establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the public.
- Adapt to diverse customer personalities and situations with professionalism.
