Definition

Under general supervision, organizes, conducts and supervises a variety of recreational programs and activities; performs related duties as required.

This recruitment is being conducted to establish a qualified list to fill two (2) part-time positions and any future vacancies as they become available, and will be merged with any current qualified lists that may already be active.

FILING DEADELINE

This recruitment is scheduled to close on February 20, 2025 but can close at any time with or without prior notice. Interested individuals are encouraged to apply immediately. WORK SCHEDULE

This is a non-benefited, at-will part-time position. Temporary / seasonal / part-time employment status does not qualify for City benefits, except for those required by law. Part-time shifts may not exceed 28 hours per week, 125 hours a month, and 960hours in a fiscal year basis (July 1 through June 30). Part-time positions are "at-will". There are no rights to employment and employment may end at any time with or without cause or advance notice.

Candidates may be required to work irregular hours, various shifts, weekends, holidays and / or on-call status. Working hours to be assigned at the discretion of the Recreation and Community Services Department.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This class is distinguished from Recreation Leader I & II by its responsibility for higher level recreation program work including the organization and instruction of various programs and activities, and providing lead direction to others.

Examples of Duties

Depending on assignment, essential duties may include, but are not limited to, those duties listed under the Recreation Leader I & II classifications in addition to the following :

Organizes, conducts and supervises free play and team activities of adults and children in outdoor and indoor play areas; officiates and instructs in games such as basketball, softball, football, baseball, volleyball, track and field.

Instructs fundamentals of play and sports conduct in recreational activities, organizes and conducts non-athletic events and programs including contests, special activity days, tournaments, and holiday programs; instructs and supervises in arts and crafts, singing and dancing and day care.

Organizes club activities, collects and accounts for money received; keeps records and prepares reports.

Supervises overall activities of playground or other sites; observes and monitors activities of participants to ensure that park rules and regulations are followed and that equipment is used in a safe manner; administers first aid as needed.

Assists in maintaining recreational facility by performing light custodial maintenance.

Qualifications

Knowledge of :

Recreation and planning and administration; the equipment, facilities, operations and techniques used in a community recreation program; to policies, rules and regulations governing the conduct and safety of persons using the recreational facilities and equipment; first aid techniques.

Ability to :

Develop, coordinate, and direct varied activities involved in a community recreation program; supervise and monitor game and team activities; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, participants, instructors and the general public; communicate effectively orally and in writing; plan and supervise the work of paid staff and volunteers; operate a City vehicles (including vans) while demonstrating safe driving practices; follow the provisions of the California Vehicle Code (CVC). Ability to speak Spanish is desirable.

Requirements

EDUCATION AND / OR EXPERIENCE :

Any combination of education and / or experience that has provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the duties and functions of the position. Example combinations include three (3) years of relevant experience, paid or volunteer, as a leader in a recreational activity which included cashier and recordkeeping duties.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT(S) :

Much be at least 16 years of age and in the eleventh grade or higher. School work permit is required if under 18 years of age.

Must be able to obtain first-aid and CPR certification within one-month of hire.

Must be in possession of a California Driver's License upon hire and have a good driving record.

PHYSICAL TASKS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

While performing the essential functions of this job, the incumbent is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects; ascend and descend stairs; maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, crouching, or running; move about on hands and knees; bend body downward and forward, requiring full use of the lower extremities and back muscles; reach with hands and arms; speak and hear; and push, pull and / or lift up to 10 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally.

The work environment described here is representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Incumbents in this classification typically work at recreation facilities (parks) where there may be extreme temperatures, exposure to sun, dirt and / or dust and on occasion in a normal office environment.

OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION

This position is represented by the Lynwood Employees' Association / AFSCME Local 1920 (LEA).

Candidates that will require mandatory reenrollment in CALPERS based on prior employment with another public agency will not be considered for part-time employment with the City based on budgetary reasons.

EMERGENCY DISASTER WORKER

City of Lynwood employees are registered as an Emergency Disaster Worker. All City employees are required to perform assigned Emergency Service duties in the event of an emergency or disaster.
