General Description

This is skilled journey level carpentry work involving all phases of layout, construction, maintenance, repair, and erection of wooden structures (and / or related building materials). Work is performed based on general verbal instruction, work orders, sketches, plans, and specifications in accordance with building codes or accepted trade practices. Employees are expected to exercise judgment and initiative in independently completing assignments.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities

  • Repair, maintain, construct and alter wooden structures, facilities, and equipment.
  • Cut, shape, fit, assemble, and install wood sections, moldings, baseboards, recreational facilities, door frames, doors, partitions, roofing, floors, windows, interior and exterior trim, and similar fixtures.
  • Build concrete forms and wooden scaffolds.
  • Construct shelves, cabinets, and bins.
  • Repair and replace door hardware such as deadbolts, locks, closures, push bars, etc.
  • Install access panels and wall protection and install insulation.
  • Assemble storage sheds.
  • Install acoustical ceilings.
  • Perform incidental glazing and tile setting work.
  • Perform related skilled hand and bench work operating power saws, planers, drills, sanders, and other tools of the trade.
  • Develop working sketches and plans and prepare related material / cost estimates.
  • Complete work order forms.
  • Indicate labor and material costs.
  • Coordinate projects and activities with other workers and supervisors, as appropriate.
  • Maintain an inventory of related tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Maintain work area(s).
  • Operate vehicle to respond to work orders and unanticipated carpentry repairs at remote sites.
  • Inspect carpentry work performed by contract for conformance with construction plans, specifications, and accepted trade practices.
  • Direct and instruct apprentices, helpers, and other assistants in carpentry related work.
  • Perform related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of journey level carpentry experience; AND
  • Completion of a recognized carpentry apprenticeship program.
  • Four (4) years of experience in applying the following :
  • Tools, equipment, materials, methods and practices of the carpentry trade.

  • Occupational safety.
  • All types of carpentry construction and standard repair and construction procedures.
  • Related building construction principles, codes, practices, and nomenclature; AND
  • Familiarity with the following :
  • Reading and interpreting construction plans and exercising judgment and skill in their application.

  • Directing and instructing apprentices, helpers, and other assistants in the trade.
  • Skillful use of all tools and machines common to the carpentry trade.
  • Preparing working sketches and cost estimates.

    Special Requirements

  • Possession of a valid driver's license at time of application.
  • Possession of a valid Class A Wisconsin Commercial Driver's License with Air Brakes and Tanker (N) endorsements. The successful candidate must have passed the written portion of the relevant Department of Transportation testing process before starting employment. A condition of continued employment is passage of the skills portion of the test and obtaining the required operator's license within six (6) months of the start date.
  • Physical Requirements :

  • Ability to skillfully operate tools common in the carpentry trade.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor and to exercise coordination and agility in completing assigned tasks.
  • Ability to lift / move objects weighing as much as 75 pounds, work safely in confined spaces and at considerable heights, and must be able to bend, crawl, and climb to reach areas where work is to be performed.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions.

    Leave

    Vacation is earned upon starting employment and can be used after completion of probation. The general vacation schedule is below.

    0-3 years 10 work days of vacation

    After 3 years 12-1 / 2 days

    After 7 years 15 days

    After 11 years 17-1 / 2 days

    After 15 years 20 days

    After 19 years 25 days

    After 27 years 27 days

    Employees earn 3.5 personal days in addition to vacation.

    Employees receive eight official paid holidays (New Year's Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day), as well as 3 paid leave days (the Friday after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve).

    Employees also earn 13 sick days annually that may accrue to a total of 150 days.
