General Description
Come be part of the future of Golf in Madison Parks! This position will ensure quality playing conditions for golf customers and other visitors by working closely with the Greenskeeper of the assigned course to support the work of hourly golf course maintenance staff.
The current recruitment is to fill two (2) vacant positions.
The successful candidate will be expected to perform all duties performed by golf course laborers, as well as a wide range of specialized golf course functions related to maintaining and restoring greens, tees, fairways, roughs, natural areas, and related course areas, under the guidance of the course’s greenskeeper. The employee will conduct basic assessments of assigned areas of courses and report back to the greenskeeper with any conditions that must be addressed. The employee will provide work assignments to seasonal golf maintenance staff, as directed by the course greenskeeper. The employee will be expected to operate general golf course maintenance machines and equipment; work with herbicides, fertilizers, and irrigation systems; and will have frequent exposure to pollen, dust, grass clippings, etc.
The pay rate for Greenskeeper Assistant 1* is $22.68 per hour.
The pay rate for Greenskeeper Assistant 2* is $24.29 per hour.
Hours of assigned work may vary. Employees may be scheduled to work up to 40 hours per week during the Golf season. Daily start time may vary, but will generally be 30 minutes prior to course opening on assigned days of work. Daily end time may vary.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities
Golf Course Greenskeeper Assistant Duties
- Perform daily condition assessments of courses and report findings to greenskeeper.
- Perform quality control inspections of courses, provide skills coaching where appropriate, and report to greenskeeper as necessary.
- Perform specialized golf course maintenance functions as directed (e.g. herbicide and fertilizer application, irrigation system adjustments, etc.).
- Communicate work duties and assignments to seasonal golf maintenance staff per greenskeeper direction.
- Serve as lead maintenance contact when greenskeeper is not on site.
- Oversee natural areas management, including volunteer projects, at The Glen Golf Park or as assigned at other golf courses; make recommendations to Greenskeeper for improvement of these areas.
- Mow greens, tees, fairways, and roughs using a variety of mowers (e.g. push mowers, large rotary mowers, reel mowers, etc.).
- Rake sand traps, change cups, and maintain trees, shrubs, plants, and flowers.
- Perform general beautification of the golf course using general handheld tools (e.g. string trimmer, leaf blower, etc.).
- Maintain and restore natural areas. Perform all duties related to natural areas management, including weeding, mowing, planting, seeding, etc.
- Clean restrooms and outbuildings on the golf course.
- Clean and maintain maintenance shop.
- Collect trash.
- Perform basic maintenance on equipment (e.g. clean mower blades and reels, check oil and coolant levels, report leaks or other damage to supervisor or mechanic).
Minimum Qualifications
To be hired as a Greenskeeper Assistant 1*:
- Four (4) full seasons of experience performing golf course maintenance, including mowing greens, tees, fairways, and roughs using a variety of mowers (e.g., push mowers, large rotary mowers, reel mowers, etc.); raking sand traps; changing cups; maintaining trees, shrubs, and flowers; performing string trimming; and performing basic maintenance on equipment (e.g., checking oil and coolant levels, etc.).
Four (4) years of experience in applying the following:
- Golf maintenance operations, including best practices, techniques, and policies.
Two (2) years of experience in applying the following:
Turf grass management and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) principles including the propagation, planting, cultivation, watering, care, and disease control of grasses, plants, and trees.
Equipment and materials used to maintain golf courses, including automated irrigation systems.
Operation of manual transmission equipment/vehicles.
- Two (2) years of formal training in turfgrass management or natural areas management through an accredited university, college, or professional association; AND
- Two (2) full seasons of experience performing golf course maintenance in a setting similar to City of Madison golf courses.
A full season is defined as six (6) or more continuous months.
The full seasons do not need to have been consecutive.

- Possession of a valid driver’s license.

Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work on uneven terrain.
- Ability to work in various weather conditions and while exposed to pollen, dust, grass clippings, fertilizers, etc.
- Ability to use general handheld tools and equipment, such as string trimmers and push mowers.
- Ability to operate manual transmission equipment/vehicles.
- Ability to monitor and adjust irrigation systems.
- Ability to apply pesticides under the direction of the greenskeeper.
- The payroll title for this position is Conservatory Curator Assistant 1 (Hourly) or Conservatory Curator Assistant 2 (Hourly).
