General Description
Metro Transit is now hiring for permanent part-time AND full-time transit operators.
NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY! We will train you how to drive a bus.
Metro provides a 13-to-15-week paid training program for full-time Transit Operators (and a shorter period for part-time Operators.) Even if you have never driven a large vehicle before, our instructors will help you become a confident Transit Operator! During this thorough training, you will receive support while you get your Commerical Driver's License (CDL) permit, your CDL license, and learn the policies and procedures necessary to be a successful Transit Operator.
This is responsible work to transport passengers in the City of Madison and surrounding areas. Employees must exercise skill and judgment in operating transit vehicles in a safe, reliable and courteous manner. Work is performed under the direction of one or more Transit Operations Supervisors.
You do not have to have a CDL permit to start!
Metro Transit will train successful candidates to get their Commercial Driver's License (CDL) permit and license during the training period. Candidates are required to pass the both the written and road tests during that portion of training after hire to continue employment with Metro Transit.

Employees may be eligible for loan forgiveness through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program .
Employees will serve a one (1) year probation period. During the initial training period of 13 to 15 weeks, Transit Operators will be scheduled for approximately 40 hours per week. Following the training period, part-time Transit Operators will work 15-20 hours per week working split shifts to cover the open and closing hours of the Public Schools. Full-time Transit Operators will work 40 hours per week in a variety of shifts, and must be available to workdays, nights, weekends, and holidays as scheduled. Good attendance is essential to continue employment.

Metro Transit has adopted the physical qualification standards provided in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations of the Federal Highway Administration. These standards permit the hiring of qualified individuals with disabilities, as required by the Wisconsin Fair Employment Act, Sec. 111.34(2)(c), Wisconsin Statutes. The successful candidate must be able to pass the Metro physical with either a 2-year certification or re-certifications for a 2-year period.

Leave
Vacation is earned upon starting employment and can be used after completion of probation. The general vacation schedule is below.

Employees earn 5 personal days in addition to vacation.
