The Water & Sewer Utility Technician III will be the primary operator of heavy equipment within the department and will be required to operate motorized construction equipment such as backhoes, loaders, dump trucks, high pressure hydraulic sewer cleaning equipment, and other related equipment.

Leads and assists work crew in the performance of assignments in maintenance, construction, and repair of the water distribution and sewer collection systems including lines, facilities, and related structures. Duties include performing water and sewer excavation and repair work, new installations, sewer manhole maintenance, lateral excavation and repair, fire hydrant maintenance and various other water and sewer related infrastructure.
Primary operator for backhoes, loaders, flush trucks, trenchers and excavators. Regularly operates backhoe/excavator used for excavating water and sewer mains for repair, maintenance or construction. Operates heavy equipment for snow removal, grading, loading dirt or gravel, and other materials as required. Operates high pressure sewer cleaning equipment. Operates excavator, track hoe, and backhoe to perform skilled digging and trenching for maintenance, and construction projects for public utilities and other infrastructure, where exacting tolerances and specification are required; controls placement of equipment and determines optimum approach to each digging scenario in order to minimize destruction of property and avoid electric, water, sewer, and other public utility lines.
Responds to emergency calls during inclement weather or other emergency situations. Participates in rotating on-call schedule to respond to after-hours needs of the department.
High school diploma or equivalent with a minimum of three years' direct experience in construction, repair, operation, and maintenance of water and sanitary sewer systems. Demonstrated history of safe and responsible operation of construction equipment, minimizing occupational hazards, and utilizing safety precautions for the work to include traffic control.
Preferred Qualifications
Certification in confined space entry and trenching and shoring is preferred.
NASSCO pipe assessment Certification and a Virginia Class V Waterworks License is also preferred.
Must complete Virginia intermediate traffic control certificate within six months of hire.
Must have or be able to obtain a Virginia Class B CDL (Commercial Driver's License) with air brakes and tanker endorsements within six months of hire.
Must have 100 hours of equipment operation in the purpose of infrastructure installation or repair.
