The City of Manhattan Beach is seeking an ambitious, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable Plans Examiner with great customer service skills to join the Community Development Department to conduct residential and commercial plan checks.
Under direct supervision, the Plans Examiner reviews plans, specifications, and structural calculations for less complex residential, commercial, and public buildings and structures for compliance with the adopted State and local codes and ordinances; advises applicants for permits; provides support to the permit counter; conducts field inspections; and does related work as required.The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. - Examines less complex plans for residential and commercial projects for compliance with applicable City and State codes and ordinances, including structural, accessibility, and fire life safety features.
- Works at the permit counter, provides customer service, and responds to questions related to building codes and local municipal code.
- Explains requirements and restrictions relative to building codes, ordinances, regulations, policies, and procedures to architects, engineers, contractors, and home owners; escalates more complex inquiries to senior staff.
- Responds to inquiries, provides technical assistance and coordinates plan check activities with other City departments, external engineers, architects, contractors, outside agencies, and the public.
- Assists in researching code changes or procedural changes to enhance efficiency within the department
- Prepares and updates comprehensive corrections lists, handouts, and forms.
- Maintains records and prepares reports and correspondence.
- May perform supervised field inspections to evaluate discrepancies between plans, specifications, and work completed.
- May be required to work shifts, weekends and/or holidays.
- High school diploma or G.E.D. is required.
- Two (2) years of related professional experience OR a Bachelor’s Degree is required.
- Must possess knowledge of Title 24 California Building Standards Codes. One (1) year of recent building plan checking experience is desirable.
- Certification by the International Code Council (ICC) as a Plans Examiner is highly desirable.
- In accordance with California Government Code Section 3100, City of Manhattan Beach employees, in the event of a disaster, are considered disaster service workers and may be asked to protect the health, safety, lives, and property of the people of the State.
California Code of Regulations- Title 24; principles, practices and methods of architectural, structural, electrical, energy, existing, historical, green, and mechanical engineering and related disciplines; effective customer service techniques; and building construction procedures, practices, methods and materials, and proper installation methods.
Ability to:
Make engineering computations and analyses to check building construction design; write comprehensive reports and recommendations; read and interpret plans and specifications; perform field inspections of all phases of building construction and identify violations of codes or ordinances; and be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with building owners, contractors, other governmental agencies, other employees, and the general public.The application filing deadline is Sunday, April 13, 2025.
