Summary/Objective
The Seasonal Educator is an integral part of the education team at the Flint Hills Discovery Center. The Seasonal Educator works closely with the Education Supervisor and Curator of Education to implement a wide variety of engaging and informative programs including but not limited to preschool programs, day camps, adult lectures/programs, education birthday parties, and special events. This individual must also possess the drive and maturity to work independently, sometimes being the only staff member assigned to a program. This is an ongoing position with hours available throughout the year.
Essential Functions
- Lead quality informal education programs on a variety of topics for youth and adult audiences.
- Assist the Education Supervisor and Curator of Education in the development of programs that are safe, inclusive, age-appropriate, and fun.
- Work independently on a variety of educational activities with minimal supervision.
- Effectively coordinate and supervise up to 24 youth varying in ages.
- Learn and demonstrate general knowledge of the historical, cultural, and natural resources unique to the Flint Hills ecological region.
- Learn and follow closely all program protocols and standard operating procedures.
- Maintain clean and organized program spaces, maintain and secure confidential program paperwork and utilize program supplies in an efficient manner.
- Maintain independence and flexibility in program delivery to account for changing conditions and guest needs.
- Work collaboratively with program partners, interns, and volunteers; maintain a professional image.
- Provide excellent customer service and open communication with colleagues and guests.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Additional Qualifications
- Valid driver’s license.
Preferred Education and Experience
- One year of college education, work/volunteer experience with school age children, courses in recreation, education, psychology, sociology or a related field.
- First Aid/CPR/AED Certification.
Other Information
- Applicants must pass drug test.
- The Seasonal Educator position is an ongoing position with available hours year-round, including occasional nights and weekends.
- Summer Adventure Camp work includes full-time, daytime hours (7:30 am – 5:30 pm) Monday through Friday for 6 weeks.
- This is not a KPERS covered position.
