Job Summary
MPRD sports officials will officiate youth and/or adult games, events, and tournaments to maintain standards of play. All competitions will be facilitated through the Manhattan Parks and Recreation Department.
Job Duties
- Provides excellent customer service and possesses a service philosophy which reflects the mission for the Parks and Recreation Department.
- Establishes and maintains cooperative professional working relationships with others, individually and in a team environment.
- Possesses characteristics of a strong work ethic, reliability, and attention to details.
- Officiates MPRD Youth Baseball and/or Softball games. Makes calls and instruct players on the rules of the game and provides communication to and from coaches and participants.
- Attends sport-specific trainings and meetings.
- Inspects sporting equipment and/or examines participants to ensure compliance with event and safety regulations.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other employees,?department personnel and the public, and communicates with them in a courteous and tactful manner, even in situations with multiple distractions.
- Effectively communicate principles of good sportsmanship and maintains a safe and positive playing environment.
- Other duties assigned.
Requirements
Required Education and Experience
- Weeknight and weekend availability (games are typically played Monday – Thursday evenings). Staff may be asked to work weekends and holidays.
Preferred Education and Experience
- Knowledge and experience of sports, game rules, and regulations.
- Certification as a KSHSAA Official (details can be found at https://kshsaa.org/Public/Official/NewOfficials.cfm)
Physical Demands / Work Environment
- Work facilities include City Park, Twin Oaks Complex, Eisenhower Ball Fields, and CiCo Park.
- May be exposed to heat, sun, rain, wind, dust, dirt .
- Noise level and activity level will be varied. You may be exposed to loud noises such as whistles, horns, buzzers, cheering, and/or yelling.
- Stands, walks, jogs, runs, sits, uses hands, handles, feels, speaks, hears, climbs stairs, pushes,?pulls, or lifts up to 50 pounds.
Other Information
- This is not a KPERS covered position.
- Seasonal, part-time position.
- Season: April - July.
