Seasonal Parks, Streets, and Cemetery Laborer

NOTE: Must have Wisconsin Driver’s License and proof of an ATV/UTV operators safety certification course if born on or after January 1, 1988.

This is a dual purpose position 1)   To provide clean and manicured City Parks, Cemetery and City Properties for the residents and visitors of Manitowoc;   2)  To aid streets maintenance crews in right of way infrastructure maintenance.  This is accomplished by providing lawn care, landscaping, trash collection, tree maintenance, sports field maintenance, equipment maintenance, pavement maintenance that may include painting/concrete/asphalt work, sewer work and a variety of other tasks in parks and on the streets around the city and on city owned property.   Most employees in this position will take daily directives from a superior while some may exercise more judgment in daily tasks.

Maintenance Class Position

Responsible for proper maintenance of the parks or cemetery facilities and grounds and may include the following duties:

• Cutting and trimming grass at assigned parks, boulevards, Cemetery, etc.
  • Operating Zero turn or riding lawnmowers
  • Operating gas powered weed eaters
• Proper maintenance on all equipment at the end of the day including cleaning and returning to proper place
• Detailed equipment preventative maintenance (checking fluids, greasing, etc.)
• Painting
• Garbage collection
• Assisting the forestry crew

Parks Specific:

• Cabin and restroom cleaning
• General building and grounds maintenance of parks, including beaches and ball diamonds
• Special events setup and takedown (heavy lifting is often involved)

Cemetery Specific:

• Watering urns, flowers, and freshly sodded areas unless there has been sufficient rain.
• Picking dead flowers
• Removing twigs and other debris from assigned sections and adjoining roads on a daily basis
• Neatly rolling up hoses and put the hoses and sprinklers in their proper places.  Watering the grass when necessary

Responsible for all of the above tasks as well as those listed below:

• Instruction of other seasonal employees in daily tasks
• Operation of larger motorized equipment, including but not limited to:
  • Tractor with Rhino mower
  • Articulating trackless lawn tractor
  • Bobcat
  • Bucket tractor
  • Diamond groomer
  • Beach groomer
  • 1 ton dump truck
• Helper on sewer maintenance vehicle
• Assist crew members on the concrete and asphalt crew
• Excavation crew
• Pavement joint sealing crew
• Helper on painting crew
• Traffic control crew
• Pothole patch crew

Experience:  Experience with any of the above tasks is preferred, but not required.

Certifications/Licenses:  Must have Wisconsin Driver’s License and proof of an ATV/UTV operators safety certification course if born on or after January 1, 1988.

Other Requirements:  Must be at least 16 years of age.

Must have the ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, blueprints, government regulations and procedures manuals, ability to complete routine paperwork evaluation after completing a task, and the ability to effectively present information to other employees and supervisors.  Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.   This position requires the ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.  Must have the ability to apply situational reasoning ability by exercising good judgment in the implementation of work orders.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Salary : $13 - $17
