- Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to drive in the state of Minnesota.
- Current Minnesota or International Fire Science Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) Accredited Firefighter II Certification

- Responds to fire, medical, hazmat, rescue, and other emergency and non-emergency calls.
- Renders aid to victims and patients involved in calls and protects property.
- Responds to and maintains proficiency in all aspects of special rescue including extrication, trench rescue, confined space, water rescue, high angle rope, and hazardous materials.
- Conducts fire investigations, preserves, and collects evidence, interviews victims, witnesses, suspects, and records findings to determine the origin and cause of structural fires.
- Tours and collects data in commercial and rental properties and area road construction sites to create pre-plans that aid in emergency response.
- Inspects commercial and rental properties to identify hazards and violations of the Fire Code and order corrections.
- Tests to ensure all fire related equipment used on calls, daily and weekly truck and pump checks, gear and uniform cleaning, tool maintenance, and hoses are working properly.
- Prepares state reports for calls for service.
- Orders equipment and supplies, maintains inventory.
- Provides public education presentations and trainings about fire service and fire prevention topics to large groups of people across the community.
- Performs all duties assigned in connection with the operation and maintenance of the Fire Service and apparatus, equipment, and quarters.
- Follows departmental policy when responding to fire, medical, hazmat, rescue, emergency, and non-emergency calls.

- Internally – Public Safety staff, Public Works staff, Records staff, Maintenance staff, and other city employees
- Externally – General public, ambulance service, vendors, Blue Earth County, State Fire Marshal's Office

- Must obtain Technician Level Certification in Hazardous Materials, High-Angle Rope Rescue, Confined Space Rescue and Trench Rescue within two (2) years of employment.
- Must obtain Operations Ice Rescue certification within two (2) years of employment.
- Must complete and obtain certification as a Fire Apparatus Operator within six (6) months of employment.
- Must maintain a primary residence within a fifteen (15) minute drive to the contiguous city limits of Mankato, driving under normal conditions and posted speed limits, within one (1) year of employment.
- Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to drive in the state of Minnesota. A Minnesota driver's license must be obtained within thirty (30) days of employment.
- Must satisfactorily complete a background investigation, pre-employment drug testing, and fingerprinting.
- Must satisfactorily complete a psychological evaluation from a licensed psychologist.
- Must successfully pass the pre-employment physical examination requirements and maintain these standards during employment.
- Must successfully complete annual physicals.
- Ability to pass medical standards for self-contained breathing apparatus; and ability to wear self-contained breathing apparatus while performing work duties.
- Must meet expectations of the work functions and knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position.
- Must comply with organizational and departmental policies.
- Must comply with data practices policies and standards relative to not public data. Any access to not public data should be strictly limited to accessing the data that are necessary to fulfill the employment responsibility. While data are being accessed, incumbent should take reasonable measures to ensure the not public data are not accessed by individuals without a work reason. Once the work reason to access the data is reasonably finished the not public data must be properly stored according to city policy and the Minnesota Statutes.
