SHIFT OPERATOR
WATER TREATMENT PLANT
The City of Mansfield, Ohio, Director of Human Resources announces the opening of the following full-time classified position in the WATER TREATMENT PLANT DIVISION:
POSITION Grade Step HOURLY ANNUAL SALARY
Shift Operator 14 D-F $16.01-$22.92 $33,301-$47,674
Starting pay is $16.01 and after two years the wage will be $22.92/hr from hire date.
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
Under the supervision of management, performs any combination of tasks pertinent to controlling the operation of the Water Treatment Plant, water sources, and water storage facilities.
EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY):
· Continuous inspection and process adjustment to ensure the efficient operation of treatment processes;
· Observes and reports variations in operating conditions; logs and interprets readings from computer, meters, gauges, charts, and instruments;
· Ability to detect uncharacteristic visual appearance, operating sounds, smells, or other properties of machinery and equipment and report the same;
· Operates a computerized Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition system (SCADA) to monitor the flow and chemical processing of water;
· Operates pumps, motorized and manual valves, gates, and plant generators to control and adjust flow and treatment processes;
· Performs necessary tasks and adjustments to ensure compliance with all State and Federal Regulations pertaining to the NPDES permit;
· Receives ensures delivery, unloading, and storage of chemicals following established protocol;
· May work around or with hazardous chemicals and clean chemical spills or leaks while wearing the proper personal protective equipment (PPE)
· Adds specified amounts of chemicals or adjusts automatic devices to add chemicals into tanks to disinfect, deodorize, and/or clarify water;
· Collects samples and conducts required laboratory testing of water samples and maintains specified laboratory certification;
· Maintains legible, accurate records and records quantitative data such as chemical levels, residual content, and water turbidity;
· Backwashes filters and monitors filters for backwash effectiveness;
· Performs simple mathematical computations such as flow, dosage, loadings, tank volumes, etc.;
· Operates plant service vehicles such as pickup trucks, forklift, mowers, non-CDL tractors, etc.;
· Performs general housekeeping duties, painting, and grounds keeping duties;
· Performs related duties as required.
DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
· Knowledge of safety practices, mathematical calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, operation of the methods and equipment used in the treatment of water for drinking purposes;
· Ability to plan and carry out instructions in oral, written or picture form, exercise independent judgment;
· Ability to operate computers and related software, proficient at data entry;
· Knowledge of SCADA systems;
· Ability to calculate chemical dosages;
· Knowledge of the regulations related to the treatment of drinking water, computer software documentation, and Safety Data Sheets;
· Ability to read schematics and diagrams;
· Ability to write descriptive sentences;
· Ability to communicate with others;
· Experience in a treatment plant operation, preferably as a Treatment Plant Operator desired.
· Class I (add $.3025/hr), Class II (add $.706/hr), or Class III (add $1.226/hr) OEPA Water Treatment Operator Certificates highly desirable;
· Must be in good physical condition with the ability to walk for extended periods of time, climb stairs, and move up and down ladders;
· Ability to work in confined spaces and other areas requiring the utilization of personal protective equipment; ability to exert fifty (50) pounds of force; ability to identify and distinguish colors;
· Degree in water treatment, biology, chemistry, environmental sciences, or related field;
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Completion of secondary education or equivalent (High School or GED). An Ohio EPA Class I Water Supply Operator Certification** or OIT status preferred.
**Must obtain an Ohio EPA Class I Water Supply Operator Certification within 18 months of hire and maintain certification for duration of employment.
