The Position
The Maple Grove Parks & Recreation Department is seeking Athletic Officials to referee various sports in our recreation programs. In this position, you will be responsible for officiating games for adult softball, volleyball, lacrosse, and soccer, maintaining a safe playing environment, and interacting professionally with all participants. Responsibilities
- Have a complete understanding of all rules used by Maple Grove Parks and Recreation Board.
- Enforce all rules throughout the entire game.
- Arrive at least 15 minutes before game time.
- Wear official designated uniform and supply own equipment for officiating game.
- Introduce yourself to the coaches prior to the beginning of each game.
- For adult sports, ensure scorecards are returned to the card box at the end of the evening.
- Utilize guidelines set forth by Parks and Recreation Board for calling games due to weather conditions.
- Coordinates efforts to ensure the City of Maple Grove is an equitable, inclusive, and respectful organization and supports the City’s mission, vision, and core values.
- Demonstrates ability to understand and respect the diversity of customers and co-workers, effectively communicating with individuals whose first language may be one other than English.
Ability to:
- Express rules and policies in a professional and assertive manner.
- Communicate with the public in an orderly and professional manner
- Utilize common sense.
- Work in all outdoor weather conditions.
Qualifications
Any combination of experience that would likely provide the required knowledge is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Need to have:
- Must be 18 years of age or older.

Current certification or ability to obtain appropriate officiating certification.
- Volleyball Official – Certified by USAVB or Minnesota State High School Association.
- Softball Umpire – Certified by USSSA.
Nice to have:
- Previous officiating experience.
Supplemental Information
Environmental Conditions:
Indoor/outdoor sporting environments. Potential exposure to all outdoor weather conditions, indoor gymnasium conditions, and loud noises.
Physical Conditions:
Ability to stand, run, and move as needed to officiate sports games.
