The Position

The City of Maple Grove is seeking a dynamic Transit & Transportation Planner to join its team in enhancing the transit system for our diverse and growing community. The role involves assisting the Transit Administrator with daily operations, analyzing data to improve services, preparing materials for city commissions, and leading rider communication efforts. You'll collaborate with various departments on active transportation initiatives, address public inquiries, and drive projects that align with community needs. Responsibilities

  • Assist the Transit Administrator with day-to-day oversight of the transit system including establishing and managing routes, ensuring functionality of transit facilities & equipment, customer service, and state and federal reporting.
  • Studies & analyzes data, engages with riders, and plans improvements to the transit system to adapt to changing customer needs and the growing community, to maximize ridership, and to ensure high level of service to patrons.
  • Prepares materials for and supports the work of city commissions around the areas of transit, mobility, and transportation plans.
  • Will lead efforts in rider communications (ex. rider alerts, notices on digital billboards, and accuracy of the real-time bus arrival signage at the transit facilities).
  • Works to align the transit system and transportation plans with the goals and needs of the community. Assists with reviewing planning applications from a transit and transportation system lens. Assists with comprehensive planning efforts.
  • Studies, plans, and responds to inquires and concerns by the general public and elected officials on the transportation system.
  • Assists the Transit Administrator and Transportation Operation Engineer in developing and implementing active transportation and mobility projects.
  • Works with other departments and the department director on last mile and active transportation initiatives including : grant writing, capital planning, and managing consultants working on improvements.
  • Under direction of the Public Works Director, serves as the point person for Maple Grove Transit in the absence of the Transit Administrator.
  • Coordinates efforts to ensure the City of Maple Grove is an equitable, inclusive, and respectful organization and supports the City's mission, vision, and core values.
  • Demonstrates ability to understand and respect the diversity of customers and co-workers, effectively communicating with individuals whose first language may be one other than English.
  • Knowledge of :

  • The role of transportation and transit in cities and regions.
  • Federal Transit Administration (FTA) and National Transit Database (NTD).
  • Public transit programs.
  • Planning and implementing active transportation or transit systems.
  • Data collection and analysis for transport and transit.
  • Research, report writing, and data management.
  • Customer service and marketing in a government context.
  • Ability to :

  • Represent the City in public affairs with various stakeholders.

  • Bachelors degree in government administration, planning, urban planning, landscape architecture, civil engineering, or comparable program
  • One year of relatable experience
  • Nice to have :

  • Masters degree in an related program
  • Experience working in public transit for a municipality or county
  • Ability to speak multiple languages

    The role's essential responsibilities require maintaining the physical stamina to sit for extended periods and general manual dexterity. Adequate hearing, vision, and speech are necessary for effective communication and operation of assigned equipment. Additionally, the position may involve infrequent lifting of items weighing up to 40 pounds.
