JOB TITLE: Water/Wastewater Plant Operator
FLSA (Overtime) DESIGNATION: Non-Exempt
OCCUPATIONAL CATEGORY: Technician
OBJECTIVE:
To insure adequate and safe water, wastewater, and irrigation plant operations for the City through careful operation of the city's plant facilities.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
- REPORTS TO: Plant Superintendent
- DIRECTS: Does not supervise any employees.
- OTHER: Has contact with city officials as well as federal, regional and state representatives.
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
This is a responsible position, which also requires technical expertise. Duties include maintaining system pumps, equipment and facilities; and performing and supervising the required testing. The plant operator also checks daily, all the machinery, pumps and equipment as well as the valves and chemical feed equipment; prepares daily reports as required by Superintendent; maintains a daily log of activities; repairs mechanical and equipment problems and ensures adequate and prompt repair; takes samples as required and performs and/or supervises the performance of tests to determine the quality of the sample; sends samples to appropriate lab for testing when performed by outside entities; insures that plant facilities are kept clean at all times; insures that the overall operation of the plant facilities remain in good condition; receives telephone calls and visitors with professional courtesy, attentiveness and concern; work varying hours and days to accommodate required overtime, shift work and/or on call schedule; and performs other related duties as may be assigned or required.
PHYSICAL & ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
Lifts and carries up to 100 pounds; pulls, pushes or drags up to 150 pounds. Walks, stands, and sits for extended periods of time. Occasionally required to run, climb, crawl, stoop, twist, balance, etc. Uses eyes, ears, nose, arms, hands, fingers, legs and feet to perform assigned duties and responsibilities. Must be able to work in confined spaces. Duties include exposure to heights; mechanical, electrical, and chemical hazards; fumes and odor, dust, mites and toxic waste hazards. Works both indoors and outdoors in extreme temperatures including heat, cold, temperature swings and inclement weather.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND TRAINING:
Experience with appropriate machinery and equipment; ability to work in mechanically oriented situations repairing equipment and machinery and to make judgments pertaining to repair needs; ability to take and understand various training courses; and ability to perform required laboratory tests and analyze results.
EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Grade C or higher certification in water and/or wastewater treatment from the applicable state agency preferred (or within eighteen months of employment)
- Valid Texas motor vehicle operator's license.
