The Traffic Signal Systems Specialist works within the Traffic Services Division, Department of Public Works, and is responsible for diagnosing, troubleshooting, and repairing complex electronic and communication systems, and evaluating equipment problems by interpreting blueprints, schematics and wiring diagrams. The incumbent must be able to modify or construct new equipment and work independently and under the guidance of the Traffic Services Supervisor, the Transportation Engineer, and the Deputy Director of Public Works - Operations. This position will be assigned to the Traffic Services Division and perform duties from the Traffic Control Center and will report directly to the Traffic Services Supervisor.

The Traffic Services Division plans to maintain and enhance this vision by implementing equipment, software, and services to monitor and control traffic flow while maintaining strategic relationships with GDOT, Cobb DOT, municipalities, consultants and contractors throughout the area.

- Maintain a superior understanding of ITS technology, field devices (i.e., CCTV, travel time devices, Ethernet field switches) and the tools and methods used to deploy them in the field.
- Installs, repairs, maintains, programs and modifies a variety of video equipment and systems.
- Conducts field surveys for appropriate camera/ITS device locations, fiber optic cable, hub site and related installations.
- Designs, tests, repairs and modifies fiber optic systems for signalized intersections, including splicing and termination.
- Conduct cabinet and system turn-ons as well as field modifications to cabinets.
- Perform annual cabinet maintenance and CMU/MMU testing.
- Performs field and bench tests of new equipment as well as service and maintenance on existing systems.
- Lead, coordinate and execute on-site work for large scale integration projects with multiple technicians. Represent the City for on-site meetings and make decisions.
- Provide informal on-site training for ATMS systems, controllers and other traffic field devices.
- Be aware and identify future needs of the city regarding traffic systems and recommend opportunities for mentoring other City technical resources as assigned.
- Help prepare estimates and preliminary proposals.
- Provides support in maintaining after-hours call rotation.
- May be required to perform duties in other divisions within the department in certain circumstances, including, but not limited to period to heavy workload, nature disasters, and city events. These duties should not require specialized training or certification and will mostly involve tasks centered around manual labor.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Associate degree in electronics or related field and three years’ work experience (OR) equivalent recognized certification and completion of a two-year technical/vocational electronics program (OR) military training in electronics and three years of work experience in electronics.
- Knowledge of the use and operation of tools and equipment used in data networks, video networks and fiber optic networks.
- Ability to install and use software packages associated with controlling electronic systems.
- Familiar with wireless systems (radio and cellular).
- Familiar with fiber-optic systems and IP networking.
- Must be able to attain IMSA Level II or higher certification within time frame established at time of hire.
- Must have a Georgia Driver’s License and a satisfactory seven-year driving history to include no DUI’s within the last five years.
