I. TITLE: Animal Control Officer

II. PAY CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt

III. REPORTS TO: Senior Animal Control Officer, Chief of Police, Assistant Chief of Police

IV. NATURE OF WORK:

The position of Animal Control Officer has a union designation. Compensation for this position is derived from the Collective Bargaining Agreement. This position shall be filled by the Chief of Police or his designee. The normal works hours for this position are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Should an unforeseen event or an emergency occur, it may be necessary to work overtime, weekends, or holidays. The Animal Control Department is city owned and shall be operated and maintained for the purpose of housing and caring for the animals that are turned in by the public or captured by city personnel.

V. TYPICAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Properly feed, water, and monitor all animals housed in department to assure all are accounted for and not exhibiting signs of illness or distress.
  • Properly clean and disinfect cages, rooms, and other areas.
  • Perform vaccinations on new animals and give medication as instructed.
  • Respond to inquiries from public and staff, including occasional contact with distressed customers.
  • Process adoptions:
  • Observe human with animal for social interaction.
  • Process appropriate paperwork and collect fees associated with the adoption.
  • Schedule vet work for spay/neuter and vaccinations.
  • Microchip dog/cat to be adopted.
  • After vetting is complete, deliver animal to new owner.
  • Submit all required paperwork, reports, and fees to City Clerk for processing.
  • All other duties assigned by the city.

VI. QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Possess a valid driver's license.
  • Obtain all required training and certifications specific to the position as required by the city.
  • Possess compassion and concern for the treatment of animals and their quality of life.
  • Possess the ability to recognize signs and symptoms of an illness of animals in possession of the Animal Control Department and what steps to take to ensure the appropriate treatment is given.
  • Possess the ability to recognize animal behaviors, such as over-aggressive tendencies.
  • Must live within a 20-mile, straight line radius of Marion City Hall.
  • Possess excellent interpersonal communication skills and establish successful working relationships.
  • Possess basic typing and computer skills.
  • Must be able to work without constant supervision.
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds.
  • Complete all pre-employment testing such as drug screening, physical, and background check successfully.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $17.62 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week
