The Arts & Culture Department at the City of Marquette is looking for a seasonal Communications Assistant. This position will be working under the supervision of the Community Services Manager of Arts & Culture. The Communications Assistant supports the day-to-day administrative operations of the City of Marquette Arts & Culture Division. This position will perform various duties supporting the overall success of the Division’s programs and major initiatives. The position interfaces regularly with artists, community partners, and the public to promote engagement and enhance the visibility of arts and culture initiatives.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all the following:
Administrative Support and Office Management
- Provide routine administrative support to the Arts & Culture Manager and other staff.
- Greet clients, visitors, and the general public.
- Provide courteous and timely responses to inquiries and requests, including answering telephones and responding to emails.
- Maintain Art Center studios, including scheduling, room setup and takedown, and cleaning.
- Assist staff with coordination and preparation for office relocation.
- May assist with grant writing and reporting.
Marketing, Communication and Community Engagement
- Assist with the promotion, coordination, and support activities related to Division’s major initiatives: Art Week, Cultural Trail, Arts & Culture Master Plan, Public Art Projects.
- Conduct surveys and participate in listening sessions.
- Assist in content development, design, and distribution of promotional materials, both print and electronic, including press releases, web content, newsletters, brochures, posters, blogs, and social media.
- Manage and monitor social media platforms, updating content and responding to inquiries.
- Monitor and maintain MQT Compass, including event approval, event creation, and updating resource pages as needed
- Collaborate with local media, artists, and arts organizations on publicity and outreach efforts.
- Manage digital and physical archive of media, photographs, video, and event materials.
- Photograph and video tape events on and off site for use by press, social media, and internal material for archive.
Research and Project Development
- Create digital content for Cultural Trail, “Stories of Land and People.” Collaborate with Trail Partners to identify existing content, research, and write stories.
- Assist with the coordination and development of the Seven Grandfather Teachings monument. Assist team with logistics, administrative support, content development, and research.
NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Perform other related functions as assigned.
MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT USED
- Basic office equipment including computers, copiers, calculators, and telephones.
- Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint), Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign), social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram), Canva, and Constant Contact
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in art, History, Anthropology, Outdoor Recreation, Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, or related field preferred.
- Experience with promotions and project coordination.
Skills and Competencies
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills.
· Strong, clear and concise writing skills.
- Proficiency in graphic design, page layout, and content creation for print and digital platforms.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and maintain effective working relationships with public officials, advisory committees, and community organizations.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop Illustrator, InDesign).
- Ability to update and manage social media platforms and websites.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Lifting 30 lbs maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 20 lbs.
- Occasional standing, walking, sitting, and driving.
- Capable of using hands/feet for repetitive single grasping, fine manipulation.
- Occasional bending, twisting, squatting, climbing, and reaching.
- Ability to communicate clearly and distinguish sounds and objects at varying distances.
