Summary of Position

Under direct supervision of the Parks and Recreation Superintendent, a seasonal Park Maintenance Worker performs routine maintenance work within the City's parks.

Duration : This seasonal position is expected to last from early spring until late fall.

Days / Hours : Monday-Friday with flexible hours based upon the weather.

Essential Functions

1. Assist with landscaping duties including mowing, weed-eating, trimming trees and shrubs, pulling weeds, edging lawns, raking, watering plants, shrubs, and trees, sweeping and clearing fallen trees, and horticultural work (planting, transplanting, and watering).

2. Assist with maintenance of existing and construction of new park equipment (benches, tables, signs, etc.).

3. Repair and maintain equipment (playground, picnic tables, etc.).

4. Clean restrooms and picnic pavilions.

5. Pick up litter and debris from grounds and parking lots.

6. Empty trash containers.

7. Assist in maintaining athletic fields and other recreational facilities. This includes but is not limited to : dragging and marking athletic fields and courts, installation and maintenance of field equipment, mowing, etc.

8. Operate a variety of vehicles and equipment, including but not limited to : hand and power mowers, tractor driven mowers, pick-up truck, water truck, hedge trimmer, pole saw, cement / asphalt saw, lawn mowers, weed trimmer, fertilizer spreader, and utility vehicle.

9. Assist with general maintenance on equipment, including refueling, changing oil, lubricating parts, and making minor adjustments, as necessary.

10. Operate a variety of hand tools, shovels, hoes, rakes, loppers, litter sticks, power mowers, edgers, and other equipment.

11. Assist in special events preparation including, but limited to community stage setup and teardown.

12. Adherence to all safety procedures, department procedures, and organizational policies.

13. Attendance is an essential function of this position.

14. Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Competencies

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A. Valid MN Class D driver's license.

B. Must be 16 years of age or older when the job begins.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

A. Preference will be given to candidates who are 18 years of age or older.

B. Previous experience and satisfactory job performance for the City of Marshall.

  • Ability to effectively and respectfully communicate and interact with other employees, supervisors, individuals from other organizations, and citizen customers.

Frequent contact with employees, department heads and supervisors, occasional contact with other municipal personnel, and the general public.

Performing the duties of this job require the use of equipment including but not limited to : pick up, water truck, hedge trimmer, cement / asphalt saw, pole saw, asphalt saw, weed trimmer, fertilizer spreader, utility vehicle, and other small hand tools.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk on uneven and rough terrain, paved and unpaved trails and sidewalks, as well as within the public rights of way. The employee is exposed to a wide range of outdoor weather conditions, occasionally working in extreme heat or cold weather.

Work hours may vary; and when necessary, evening, weekend, and holiday hours will be required. Some positions may regularly work evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Additional Information

Eligibility for hire will require the successful completion / passage of all pre-employment screening requirements which may include : a driving and criminal history background check, and reference check.

Temporary and seasonal employees will receive paid leave time in accordance with Minnesota's sick and safe time law at a rate of 1 hour for every 30 hours worked, up to a maximum accrual of 48 hours per calendar year. Employees must work at least 80 hours in a calendar year to be eligible for paid leave time.
