The City of Martinez Recreation Department is seeking a dedicated, team-oriented, and community-focused Recreation Leader III (Senior Center) Temporary/Seasonal who is passionate about creating meaningful experiences for seniors, adults, and inclusive recreation participants while positively impacting the community!
Under general supervision, this position will direct, organize, and supervise recreation programs and activities specifically for seniors aged 50 , adults, and inclusive recreation participants; set up and maintain City facilities and equipment for programs and special events; and follow oral and written instructions.
The position offers 12–15 hours per week, with the potential to increase up to 20 hours weekly, not to exceed 1,000 hours per fiscal year. This position is not eligible for City benefits. Paid sick leave will be accrued in accordance with the Healthy Workplaces/Healthy Families Act of 2014 (Assembly Bill1522).The primary location for this position will be the Senior Center, where responsibilities include:
- Working at the front desk
- Performing customer service and administrative tasks
- Supporting staff with special projects and activities
- Facilitating recreational activities
- Preparing marketing materials such as senior newsletters, pamphlets, etc.
- Assisting with the planning and executing of programs and seminars
- Other duties as required
Education and Experience:
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
- Minimum Age: 18 years of age.
- Equivalent to two years of paid or volunteer work as a group leader or lead worker in an organized, recreation or community service program with specific expertise or experience in program area of recruitment.
- Experience working with seniors aged 50 is highly desirable
- Appropriate clearances from background check/fingerprinting and documentation of a negative skin test for TB within the last two (2) years are required.
- Be able to obtain certification in American Red Cross Adult/Pediatric First Aid/CPR and AED or equivalent within 90 days of employment.
- Experience coordinating recreation programming, demonstrate exceptional customer service skills, and have a passion for working with diverse populations.
Knowledge of:
- Common sports, games and recreation activities appropriate for all ages.
- Concepts of program risk management and safe work practices.
- Supervise and lead members of the community of various ages.
- Communicate effectively and possess excellent interpersonal skills while interacting with program participants, co-workers, supervisors, and the general public.
- Handle and prioritize multiple tasks.
- Provide reliable and dependable assistance to the assigned program areas.
- Provide creativity and enthusiasm to the assigned program areas.
- Work outdoors in a variety of weather and temperature conditions.

Must possess mobility to work in a standard office and/or recreational facility setting and use standard office and/or recreation equipment, including a computer; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. Must possess the physical stamina to lift and move tables and chairs and arrange facilities for community events and/or meetings. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment. Positions in this classification occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, reach, climb, and walk on uneven surfaces to participate in recreational activities; and push and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS
Employees may work in the field and are occasionally exposed to loud noise levels, cold and/or hot temperatures, vibration, confining workspace, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards. Incumbents may be exposed to blood and body fluids rendering First Aid and CPR and are required to wear appropriate attire for the recreation activity to which they are assigned. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.
WORKING CONDITIONS
May be required to work a varied schedule of hours, which may include early mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays, at a variety of City facilities. This is a temporary part-time position. The successful candidate would be required to work variable hours. Hours can vary from 10-30 hours per week. Incumbents may be required to work weekends, evenings, and holidays
