NATURE OF WORK:
This is responsible technical work in the operation of the sludge handling facility at the Water Pollution Control Plant. Work involves supervising sludge disposal activities according to established procedures. Work may also include the supervision of plant operators and laborers. Work is performed under the general direction of the plant supervisor and work is reviewed through observation, inspection, and records for adherence to established standards and for proper operations.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Keeps records of sludge handling facility and work hours.
Operates sludge handling equipment as required; reads gages and charts and records readings; regulates and maintains proper dosage of chemicals; checks chemicals, supplies, and equipment; drives sludge hauling truck to landfill.
Keeps sludge handling equipment, building, and trucks clean; assists with maintenance and housekeeping throughout treatment plant as needed; and performs related work as required.
Performs minor maintenance as needed on sludge-handling equipment and schedules major work with maintenance personnel.
Coordinates operation and maintenance of aerobic digestors with sludge dewatering equipment. Transfers digester tanks as needed to maintain proper digestion and optimum dewatering efficiency.
Performs related duties as assigned or required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OF WORK:
Graduation from high school (or the equivalent); and experience in the operation of sludge handling equipment; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the following knowledge, abilities and skills:
Thorough knowledge of the materials, methods, practices and equipment used in the maintenance an operation of a sludge handling facility.
Considerable knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the work.
Ability to analyze operational problems and conditions and to take corrective action.
Ability to ensure that safety rules are enforced, maintains records, and prepares reports.
Ability to perform required sludge analyses and evaluate results.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, employees and the public.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to and transport 55-gallon chemical drums and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.
The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT :
Must possess a valid Virginia Commercial Driver's License with tanker endorsement, or be able to obtain one within six months of employment.
