This position is responsible for operating and maintaining the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). This a journey level position which performs a variety of operating, maintenance and testing activities related to wastewater treatment. Employees in this class will assist other operation and maintenance personnel and may act as a trainer for employees in the WWTP Operator-in-Training classification. Work is performed within established procedures and with priorities and deadlines established according to city, state and / or federal wastewater treatment requirements. Employees in this class work independently with supervision mainly exercised over outcomes and products rather than work processes, and employees are expected to keep supervisors informed of problems. The work is performed under the general supervision of the Division Supervisor and the WWTP Operations Lead.

There are three levels in the WWTP Operator series. The WWTP Operator I is distinguished from the Operator-in-Training and other WWTP Operator classifications by certification, demonstrated understanding of WWTP equipment and operation and the ability to analyze and make process change recommendations. The WWTP Operator II is distinguished from other WWTP Operator classifications by certification, demonstrated understanding of WWTP equipment and operation and the ability to analyze and make process change recommendations. The WWTP Operator III is distinguished from other WWTP Operator classifications by certification, demonstrated understanding of WWTP equipment and operation and the ability to analyze and make process changes and / or recommendations. Progression through the WWTP Operator classification series to a WWTP Operator III is required and is effective upon meeting the requirements for the next higher classification for Wastewater Certification level.

We are currently hiring for a WWTP Operator ranging from level 1 to level 3, depending on candidate qualifications.

Examples of Job Duties

Other duties may be assigned as needed.

  • Operates and maintains all pumping and control equipment at the WWTP.
  • Performs routine maintenance and repair on plant systems.
  • Collects samples and performs all laboratory testing of WWTP influent / effluent including temperature, pH, flow, chlorine residual, dissolved oxygen, settable solids, fecal coliform, BOD, CBOD, TSS, VSS, QC testing, or other testing as required.
  • May assist as needed with the pretreatment program including inspections and sampling.
  • Assists in preparing and recording all monthly and quarterly reports for the Department of Ecology.
  • Orders parts, equipment, and materials for plant operations and maintenance.
  • Performs a variety of building, grounds, custodial, and maintenance duties relating to wastewater treatment facilities.
  • Analyzes equipment needs and make recommendations to the supervisor for potential additions, replacements, alterations, and repairs to the plant and related supporting equipment.
  • Monitors SCADA system to ensure process is within established parameters; ensures that the control strategies are properly configured; for example : flow distributions, dissolved oxygen levels, instrument are calibrated, temperatures and pressures are within acceptable ranges.

WWTP OPERATOR I :

Salary : $38.72 - $47.15 hourly

Experience :

  • Two years of experience performing a variety of the essential duties of the position or a related position in a wastewater utility with at least one year of operating experience at a Class II Wastewater Treatment Plant.
  • Education and Training :

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Two years of college level coursework or equivalent technical training in chemistry, biology, engineering, environmental science, or related field.
  • Licenses or Certificates :

  • Group I Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator certification by date of hire, OR
  • Possess a valid Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate recognized as an equivalent to the Washington State Group I Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate by the Association of Boards of Certification AND obtain a Washington State Group I Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate within six (6) months of hire.
  • Must possess a Group II Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator certification within one year of eligibility.
  • Must possess, or have the ability to possess within one month of hire date, a Washington State Driver's License.
  • Must possess, or have the ability to possess within six months of hire date, first aid and CPR certifications.
  • WWTP OPERATOR II :

    Salary : $41.42 - $50.46 hourly

    Experience :

  • Three years of experience performing a variety of the essential duties of the position or a related position in a wastewater utility with at least two years of operating experience at a Class II Wastewater Treatment Plant.
  • Education and Training :

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Two years of college level coursework or equivalent technical training in chemistry, biology, engineering, environmental science, or related field.
  • Licenses or Certificates :

  • Group II Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator certification by date of hire, OR
  • Possess a valid Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate recognized as an equivalent to the Washington State Group II Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate by the Association of Boards of Certification AND obtain a Washington State Group II Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate within six (6) months of hire.
  • Must possess a Group III Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator certification within one year of eligibility.
  • Must possess, or have the ability to possess within one month of hire date, a Washington State Driver's License.
  • Must possess, or have the ability to possess within six months of hire date, first aid and CPR certifications.
  • WWTP OPERATOR III :

    Salary : $44.33 - $53.99 hourly

    Experience :

  • Four years of experience performing a variety of the essential duties of the position or a related position in a wastewater utility with at least two years of operating experience at a Class II Wastewater Treatment Plant.
  • Education and Training :

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Two years of college level coursework or equivalent technical training in chemistry, biology, engineering, environmental science, or related field.
  • Licenses or Certificates :

  • Group III Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator certification by date of hire, OR
  • Possess a valid Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate recognized as an equivalent to the Washington State Group III Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate by the Association of Boards of Certification AND obtain a Washington State Group III Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate within six (6) months of hire.
  • Group IV Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate is encouraged.
  • Must possess, or have the ability to possess within one month of hire date, a Washington State Driver's License.
  • Must possess, or have the ability to possess within six months of hire date, first aid and CPR certifications.

The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and the risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. This position works a regular schedule, however, incumbents may be called in to work at irregular times in emergency situations, and incumbents must be available for call-out as needed.
