The purpose of this position is to protect life and property, prevent or suppress crime, apprehend criminals, and enforce laws. Work is performed independently in accordance with departmental procedures and policies under the general direction of a Police Sergeant; the incumbent exercises judgment and decision-making in handling sensitive and/or emergency situations. The incumbent fills the role of a front-line supervisor as Acting Sergeant in the absence of a Police Sergeant, or otherwise performs the duties of a Police Officer.Other duties may be assigned as needed.

While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; run; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must be able to lift up to 25 pounds on a frequent basis; lift 25 to 75 pounds on an occasional basis; and lift and/or move 75 –100 pounds rarely or in emergency situations. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, night vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
This position works in an office and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. The employee sometimes works in or near moving traffic and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, or toxic or caustic chemicals, or vicious or otherwise dangerous animals. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

There will be no accommodations made for alternative testing dates for the assessment center.

The incumbent fills the role of a front-line supervisor as Acting Sergeant in the absence of a Police Sergeant, or otherwise performs the duties of a Police Officer.Other duties may be assigned as needed.
- In coordination with or due to the absence of a Police Sergeant, supervises employees, which may include commissioned and non-commissioned officers, on assigned shifts or other specialty work assignments; reviews employees’ work to ensure effectiveness and compliance with instructions, departmental policies and procedures and federal, state, and local laws; and addresses employee complaints and resolves problems.
- Assists the Sergeant with evaluating performance of assigned employees and volunteers; provides training, direction, and assistance to assigned staff.
- In the absence of a Police Sergeant, and while assigned to the Acting Sergeant role, conducts shift briefings; reviews and approves all reports submitted by employees; assigns work activities and coordinates schedules, projects, and programs.
- Disseminates memos, policies, and orders and ensures that employees understand and comply with them.
- Prepares accurate and detailed investigative reports; completes a variety of forms, waivers and citations; and prepares and maintains records related to assigned activities.
- Reviews reports and monitors assigned cases for progress and disposition as directed by a Police Sergeant.
- When not assigned to Acting Sergeant duties, performs the duties of a Police Officer.
- Enforces federal, state and local laws; may be called in for emergency policing situations.
Experience:
- Must have three (3) years of experience as a commissioned, full-time, fully compensated, certified peace officer with at least one year of service with the Marysville Police Department.
- Must have successfully completed the probationary period as a police officer with the City of Marysville prior to the date of application.
Education and Training:
- High school diploma or GED certificate is required.
Other Qualifications:
- Must be at least 21 years of age by date of application.
- Must be able to successfully complete the City’s civil service examination process for Police Corporal.
- Must not have been convicted of a felony offense.
- Must be a citizen of the United States of American or a lawful permanent resident by date of application.
- Must be able to work a variety of scheduled shifts up to twelve (12) hour duration including nights, weekends and holidays.
Licenses or Certificates:
- Must maintain Washington State Peace Officer Certification as mandated by Washington State law.
- Must possess, or have the ability to possess within twelve months, First Line Supervisor certification.
- Must possess a valid Washington State driver’s license.
- Must possess, or have the ability to possess within six months of hire date, first aid and CPR certifications.
