What are the responsibilities and job description for the Planning Intern position at City of Mason City?
The City of Mason City is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Planning Intern to support the Development Services Department during the summer of 2025. This internship offers an excellent opportunity for students or recent graduates in Urban Planning, Public Administration, Geography, or related fields to gain hands-on experience in municipal planning and community development.
Work Schedule: 8:00AM – 4:30PM. Some evening hours may be required to attend commission, board, and City Council meetings.Essential Duties:
- Administrative Support: Assist in organizing and maintaining planning documents, zoning maps, permit applications, and other records.
- Commission Support: Provide support to the Planning and Zoning Commission, Zoning Board of Adjustment, and Historic Preservation Commission, including preparing meeting agendas, reports, minutes, and related materials
- Research and Analysis: Conduct research and data collection related to land use, zoning, historic preservation, and development trends specific to Mason City.
- Public Interaction: Respond to public inquiries and provide information regarding planning policies and planning procedures, as well as information on other Development Services functions, under supervision.
- Special Projects: Assist with special projects, including preparing case reports for the Planning & Zoning Commission, Zoning Board of Adjustment, or the Historic Preservation Commission.
- Other Duties: Perform other duties as assigned to support the Development Services Department.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Education: Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Urban Planning, Public Administration, Geography, or a related field.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel); familiarity with GIS and graphic design software is a plus.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Interest in local government, city planning, and community development.
