What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sanitation Operator III / CDL position at CITY OF MAUMELLE?
An Operator III may work for the Sanitation Department or Street Maintenance Department of Public Works carrying out various duties for which these departments are responsible. Sanitation is mainly responsible for providing house-to-house trash service for residents and operating the transfer/recycle center. Street Maintenance is mainly responsible for the maintenance and construction of streets in the City of Maumelle. The typical duties for these positions would include (but are not limited to): driving sanitation and recycle trucks, operating backhoe and track-hoe, asphalt paver, fork lift, bulldozer, dump trucks, jackhammer, chain saw, using various hand and power tools, haul trash, pour concrete, lay asphalt, and anything that needs to be done and as directed by the Supervisor and/or Director of Public Works.
Essential Job Duties
- Operates machinery and equipment such as graders, backhoes, dozers, front-end loaders, and other related machinery and equipment;
- Operate equipment such as mowing machines, jackhammers, chain saws, concrete saws, and posthole diggers; use hand tools such as saws, hammers, nail guns, and related equipment and tools;
- Mow grass using riding or other type of lawnmowers;
- Remove or trim shrubs, hedges, and trees using hand or power tools;
- Plant grass, flowers, and trees;
- Paint and repair park benches and other park equipment;
- Build, repair, and paint guardrails and fences;
- Remove weeds and trash from parks and streets;
- Perform heavy manual labor for extended periods and under varying weather conditions;
- Ground maintenance work such as weed-eating, edging, and similar tasks;
- Building maintenance work such as painting, carpentry, concrete, and similar tasks;
- Pick up trash on rights-of-way, parks, common areas, and other City property;
- Repair playground equipment and motor vehicle equipment, as instructed;
- Assist Crew Foreman in the design and construction of street signs and traffic control devices;
- Install and maintain street signs and traffic control equipment;
- Assist Crew Foreman in performing carpentry and building maintenance work in City owned buildings;
- Assist in construction projects of laying concrete blocks, mixing and pouring cement mortar, constructing and repairing street curbs, gutters, and sidewalks;
- Operate paint striper for painting markings on street surfaces, sidewalks, and parking lots;
- Work on street construction and maintenance crews performing tasks such as breaking pavement, pouring and shoveling asphalt and concrete, removing ice and snow, salting and sanding streets, and other similar tasks;
- Operate and perform minor maintenance on trucks and other motor-driven equipment;
- Supervise assigned employees;
- Notify the Director of unusual or suspicious activities or circumstances;
- Perform any other activities as may be deemed necessary by the Director of Public Works.
Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and 12 to 18 months related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience; and 1 to 6 months managerial/supervisory experience. Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License; ADEQ Solid Waste license
Supplemental Information: While performing the functions of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet or humid conditions (weather and non-weather); and works near moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to work in high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outdoor weather conditions; extreme cold (weather and non-weather); and extreme heat (weather and non-weather).
Occasionally, may work nights, weekends, or holidays.
