SUMMARY OF POSITION

Under general supervision, this position is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the assigned department. With an emphasis on teamwork, leadership, and the customer experience, this position is also responsible for supervision of professional and support staff. Responsibilities may differ according to assigned area. Performs related work as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Leads in creating an environment where customers have the best possible library experience.
  • Assists with development, improvement and implementation of policies, procedures, workflows, and organizational goals and objectives.
  • Coaches, supervises, evaluates, and recommends the hiring of library staff.
  • Facilitates and participates as an active member on the Library Leadership and other cross functional teams.
  • Builds and facilitates relationships with other City departments and area organizations.
  • Acts as a library and City ambassador at community events.
  • Designs, creates, facilitates, and implements engaging public classes, programming, and outreach activities.
  • Assists customers with readers' advisory, reference, circulation, and information services.
  • Serves as "Librarian in Charge" when the Library Branch Manager is absent.
  • Participates in the preparation and administration of a library departmental budget.
  • Manages and develops assigned areas of the library collection.
  • Prepares and presents reports to the Library Advisory Board.
  • Stays informed of library developments and trends.
  • Attends and participates in professional meetings, conferences, seminars.

  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Master's degree in Library Science or similar field, supplemented by two (2) years' progressively responsible supervisory experience.

    Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bilingual skills
  • Three (3) years' experience in management of a library department.
  • CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Must pass a drug screen and background check.
  • Must have Class C Texas Driver's License
  • Must be able to work a combination of morning, afternoon, evening, and weekend shifts.
  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and / or pulling of objects and materials of light to medium weight (10-50 pounds). May also involve the pushing and / or pulling of objects or materials up to one-hundred (100) pounds between. Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or work station. Some tasks require visual / sound perception / discrimination and oral communications ability.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT

    Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
