SUMMARY OF POSITION
The City of McKinney is seeking to hire an intern in the Engineering Department to provide significant contributions to the success of one of the fastest growing cities in the nation. Under general supervision of the Director of Engineering, this position may perform a full range of duties related to one or more functions of the Engineering Department, as assigned and detailed further below. As a member of one or more of the assigned Department teams, you will have the opportunity to work on real projects. As an intern, you'll see how what you are learning in school transforms into real life situations. Your role in the group is an important one, your work is taken seriously, and you are counted on as a contributing member of a team.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform a wide variety of duties, which may include, but are not limited to, assisting the Engineering Department in the following areas depending on assignment:
- Help collect, analyze and present data that will improve the quality of services provided (i.e. Neighborhood Traffic Management / Traffic Signal Operations / Traffic Control, etc.)
- Assist with various inspections and/or field reviews/testing for various department functions (i.e. Infrastructure Construction, Traffic Observation and Monitoring, Construction Inspection, Stormwater/Drainage, etc.)
- Assist with departmental records and the review of various engineering plans, including infrastructure plans, development plans, permits, and studies
- Assist in the evaluation of public complaints
- Provide information and assistance to managers, employees and the general public
- Work as a cooperative and supportive member of the Division to provide exceptional customer service.
- Comply with all written City policies and procedures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Must be currently enrolled in a college engineering program to be eligible for participation in the City of McKinney Internship Program for the Engineering Department. Must have excellent communication skills, both written and oral and ability to work courteously with the public. Should be self-motivated and able to stay on task with a minimal amount of direction.
Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge of Microsoft office products (Word, Excel, and Access) preferred.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Must pass a drug screen and background check.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (10-15 pounds).
Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or work station.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
There is limited exposure to environmental conditions. However, tasks may require working in outdoor weather conditions and potentially near moving mechanical parts depending on assigned tasks.
