SUMMARY
Under general supervision, the purpose of the position is to ensure proper adherence to fire and related codes and ordinance requirements for approval of construction or process implementation. Employees in this classification perform skilled, technical level work. This position is responsible for evaluating plats, site plans, civil drawings, building plans, specifications, construction drawings, fire sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems, hydraulic calculations, circuit analysis, chemicals, conducting inspections, conducting fire pump testing and installation of hazardous materials. Performs related work as required.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Reviews and evaluates routine plats, site plans, civil drawings, building plans and specifications, construction drawings, and fire protection system designs and calculations.
- Attends meetings with architects, developers, and City staff to review code requirements and Fire Department procedures.
- Provides technical advice and assistance to developers relating to code compliance.
- Responds to fire code, ordinance, and life safety inquiries from citizens.
- Conducts inspections of fire hazard complaints.
- Conducts technical inspections of fire protection systems and complex target hazards as required.
- Conducts water flow analysis, hydrostatic tests, and fire alarm tests and develops strategies to mitigate challenges.
- Acts as community liaison for fire safety programs to promote commercial and industrial training programs to increase fire safety in the workplace.
- Provides technical assistance to incident commanders for structural safety, fire protection systems, hazardous materials, and other technical matters.
- Provides technical training to Fire Officers and Personnel for fire protection systems, designs lesson plans, and provides technical advice and assistance for inspections and educational purposes.
- Attends continuing education classes to maintain certification levels as required by department.
- Assists Fire Marshal in the preparation of ordinances regarding fire codes.
- Prepares and maintains reports, files, correspondence and memorandums.
- Receives and records incoming and outgoing building plans.
- Maintains and creates filing systems.
- Assists in the investigations of fires, their origin and cause for Fire Code compliance issues.
- Prepares monthly production reports.
- Comply with all written City policies and procedures.
- Adhere to assigned work schedule as outlined in City and department attendance policies and procedures.

- High school diploma or GED; and Sixty (60) hours of college education from an accredited university or college with a 2.0 or higher overall grade point average (GPA) supplemented by experience demonstrating the ability to interact effectively with both public and private sector organizations.
- Must be certified as a Basic Fire Inspector by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection or become certified within 6 months.
- One (1) year previous experience with a Fire Department and documented training or specialized college level course work involving plan review of various architectural/construction drawings, fire protection engineering/technology or closely related field.
Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Associate's degree in Fire Protection Engineering/Technology, Civil Engineering, Emergency Management, or related field.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Tasks involve the ability to exert very moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds). Some tasks require visual, depth, odor and sound perception and discrimination and oral communications ability.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Tasks may risk exposure to extreme heat/cold or extreme weather conditions, strong odors and/or smoke, strong and/or toxic chemicals.
