POSITION SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Park Supervisor, the Park and Public Facilities Maintenance Worker is a non-exempt position under FLSA. This position assists with the maintenance of city parks, municipal building, community building and all public facilities, performs mowing duties, and maintains department equipment. This employee should possess a strong mechanical aptitude, effective communication, and public relation skills.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

· Performs minor building related maintenance and repair, duties include but not limited to plumbing, construction, carpentry, electrical, HVAC, flooring, painting, to city parks, municipal building, community building and all public facilities and shelters;

· Responsible for the management, cleanliness and maintenance of the city’s community building;

· Assist in the design, layout, and care of the city’s flowerbeds and shrubs;

· Assist in the application of chemicals, including insecticides, growth regulators, and fertilizers;

· May perform data entry and design spreadsheets for the department;

· Purchases department supplies and maintain inventory;

· Responsible for the repairs and maintenance of playground equipment and picnic tables;

· Responsible for painting, washing, waxing, and moving of picnic tables or park benches;

· Responsible for the maintenance of department vehicles and equipment;

· Performs landscaping and tree trimming;

· Performs mowing duties;

· Performs irrigation repairs;

· Responsible for the repairs and maintenance of city fencing, including split rail and chain link;

· Operates department equipment, including trucks, mowers, and hand tools;

· Performs tree removal from city grounds;

Plants, maintains and removes plant material from beds through-out the city;

· Follows department policies and procedures;

· Follows safety procedures and practices.

· Performs snow removal from city sidewalks and other areas as assigned;

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

· Responsible for maintenance of department trucks, tractors, pumps, and small engines;

· Checks Lakeside cabin, municipal building, community building, city parks, and all public facilities for cleanliness and supplies.

· Performs mowing, edging, and painting duties;

· Assists with snow removal from city sidewalks and facilities during inclement weather;

· Assists with the removal of dead animals from the parks;

· Assists with wild animal and mosquito control;

· Performs other duties as deemed necessary or assigned

PARK AND PUBLIC FACILITIES MAINTENANCE WORKER

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Experience:One to three years of similar or related experience is required. Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well within six months of employment.

Education: A high school diploma or G.E.D. is required. Continuing education in a related field is expected. This employee must possess a valid Kansas Driver’s License (KDL and have and maintain a good driving record. This employee may be required to possess or obtain within one year of hire the following certifications. Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) Certification, Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) Certification, Pesticide Applicator Certifications (1D, 2, 3A, 3B, 3C, 5, 9A).

Technical Skills: An employee should possess a strong mechanical aptitude and thorough knowledge of maintenance and repair techniques. The ability to maintain city flowers and shrubs is required. Furthermore, a working knowledge of horticulture, plant and shrub maintenance, fertilizer and pesticide applications is also required. A working knowledge of mathematics and computers is expected. This employee must be able to operate greenhouse furnaces, evaporative coolers, sprayers, misters, domestic fertilizer injectors, greenhouse alarms, irrigation controllers, soil sterilizers, hedge trimmers, tillers, small tractors, mowers, hand tools, weed eaters, trucks, chain saws, computers, printers and other department equipment. The ability to follow department policies and procedures, to read and interpret written instructions, reports, and manuals is required. Must follow safety procedures at all times.

Problem Solving:

Independent problem solving is involved in this position. This employee encounters problems with mechanical greenhouse malfunctions, insects, plant diseases, vandalism to city flowerbeds and weather delays.

Decision Making:

Independent decision making is involved in this position. This employee makes decisions about designing city flowerbeds, use of chemicals and fertilizers, prioritizing daily assignments, and performing daily duties in the safest and most efficient manner.

Supervision: This employee works with occasional supervision from the Public Lands and Facilities Director and Park Supervisor. This employee exercises supervision over part-time, temporary or seasonal subordinate personnel.

Financial Accountability: This employee is responsible for the safe operation of department equipment. This employee does have the authority to purchase necessary supplies. This employee does not participate in the annual budget process.

Personal Relations: Daily contact with the general public, co-workers, and supervisory personnel is expected.

Working Conditions: Some adverse working conditions exist within this position. Exposure to blood borne pathogens, hazardous chemicals, heavy equipment, excessive noise, work in confined spaces, heights, and all types of weather conditions is expected.

Physical Requirements: Manual labor including lifting and carrying heavy objects, bending, kneeling, extensive walking, and the ability to operate departmental equipment is required daily in this position.

Residential Requirements: Must obtain residency within 15 miles of the city limits of McPherson
