The Medford Police Department is now recruiting for entry-level Police Officers.

Our dedicated team consists of nearly 185 employees and over 30 volunteers, committed to delivering excellent police services and outstanding customer service in all operations.

This role is for Patrol Officers tasked with covering one of the five beats in our City. We require our officers to not only respond to service calls but also actively patrol their assigned areas and build relationships with our citizens. Officers are encouraged to seek innovative solutions to recurrent issues to help reduce crime.

Minimum qualifications for this position include :

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent; and
  • Be 21 years of age by date of hire with no felony convictions; and
  • Have a valid driver's license by date of hire; and
  • Successfully pass the (NTN) exams - see more information in Supplemental Information section below.

Additional requirements :

  • Successfully pass the Oregon Physical Abilities Test (ORPAT ) administered by MPD.

  • Successful completion of a background investigation to the satisfaction of the City.
  • Obtain Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) clearance upon hire.
  • Ability to speak English clearly.
  • Knowledge of English grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and punctuation; ability to write the English language clearly, accurately, concisely, legibly, and correctly.
  • Ability to obtain DPSST Basic Police Certificate after successful completion of the academy and field training.
  • Ability to work 24 / 7 schedules including holidays.
  • Ability to maintain an acceptable driving record.
  • Work schedule : The patrol teams operate on 3 / 12 and 4 / 10 weekly schedules, with an additional 8-hour training day each month - supporting a balance between work and personal life. Monthly training covers important refresher topics including defensive tactics, Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC), crisis negotiation, Mobile Response Team (MRT) skills, hazardous materials (HAZMAT) awareness, ethics, leadership development, CPR / first aid, and up-to-date legal information.

    Potential Pay Differentials :

  • English / Spanish bilingual proficiency 4.5%
  • College credits up to 5% for a bachelor's degree
  • DPSST Intermediate certification 2%
  • DPSST Advanced certification 5%
  • Certain specialty assignments also qualify for differential pay

    Essential Functions of the Position :

  • Patrols assigned area, enforces traffic and criminal laws; observes and investigates unusual conditions in facilities, property or other areas; conducts investigations of felony and misdemeanor criminal activities; secures crime scenes as appropriate; investigates suspicious persons, vehicles, circumstances; deters crime by providing high visibility; takes appropriate action or makes arrests; transports arrested individuals for booking, as required; issues citations and warnings; investigates accidents; reports public safety hazards; and directs traffic.
  • Assists the public regarding directions, laws, and other information as needed.
  • Prepares and disseminates reports and makes recommendations on actions to be taken.
  • Investigates local, state, and federal crimes which may include determining :
  • Appropriate actions to be taken.

  • Resources to utilize.
  • Who to interview.
  • Appropriate evidence to be collected.
  • If illegal activities are civil or criminal infractions.
  • Responds to calls for service, which may include :
  • Determining level of emergency or non-emergency.

  • Formulating tactics to be used in approaching and contacting individuals.
  • Determining if a report should be written, etc.
  • Enforces local, state, and federal laws; cites and / or arrests individuals who have violated applicable laws.
  • Provides credible court testimonies.
  • Investigates traffic offenses and vehicular collisions, instructs public safety classes, conducts emergency traffic control activities, and participates in specialty details.
  • Investigates a variety of in-depth cases, interrogations, and processes evidence.
  • Work Environment & Physical Demands : This position requires work that includes exposure to regular inside and outside noise and distractions, lighting, and HVAC systems in relation to temperature. This environment also includes interactions with the public, contact with hot and cold temperatures and a large variety of potential health and safety exposures. This environment may also include interactions with the public including angry / hostile individuals.

    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to accomplish each of the essential job functions satisfactorily. Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer; maintain State-mandated physical standards, including mobility and physical strength and stamina to respond to emergency situations and apprehend suspects; vision to maintain firearms qualification and to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person, before groups, and over the telephone or radio. The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking and running on uneven terrain, climbing and descending structures to access crime scenes and to identify problems or hazards. Be physically active for long periods without getting tired or out of breath. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate police services equipment. Positions in this classification frequently bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb to perform work and inspect work sites. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects, as well as crime / accident suspects / victims weighing up to 150 pounds and heavier weights with the appropriate assistance.

    NTN is the service provided to conduct the Frontline National Law Enforcement exam and pre-recorded video interviews. NTN does not replace the Medford Police Department's responsibility and decision making in the evaluation process.

    All Police Officer applicants must take the Frontline National exam, complete the Public Safety Self-Assessment (PSSA), and pre-recorded video interviews with the by the application closing date. Applicants are not required to complete NTN's Personal History Questionnaire.

  • To avoid missing the deadline, we recommend you don't delay in completing this part.

  • There are two parts; part 1 takes approximately 1 hour / part 2 takes approximately 1 and 1 / 2 hours.
  • 3. Pre-recorded Video Interviews

  • Candidates will be asked six (6) interview questions via NTN's candidate portal.
  • There is a maximum of three (3) minutes allocated to each response.
  • Be prepared, practice responses to common interview questions.
  • Dress professionally as you would for an in-person interview.
