Description
Melbourne Police Department booking officers report to a Patrol Lieutenant. They perform various functions but are crucial in safely handling, detaining, and efficiently processing prisoners. Booking officers work with considerable independence within established policies, procedures, and guidelines. They also perform other work as required.
Booking officers will be assigned to one of four patrol squads and work 12-hour shifts, either days or nights
Examples of Duties
- Obtains fingerprints, searches prisoners, secures property, takes photographs, completes forms and reports, and enters data into a computer.
- Conducts weekly holding facility inspections.
- Maintains accurate records of inmate logs and associated records
- Ensures prisoner safety and access to basic needs.
- Releases prisoners from custody when appropriate
- Communicates with prisoners, supervisors, officers, and other allied agencies
- Uses and maintains police equipment including but not limited to computers, cameras, keys and other equipment as needed.
- Prepares case reports, booking reports, and other reports as required
- Assists the Patrol Division by providing information, assistance, and services to the general public, employees, and others in person, by telephone or by other forms of communication.
- Assists officers with property and evidence by cataloging, documenting, packaging and submitting for storage, as directed by a supervisor.
- May be required to provide court testimony.
- Maintains strict confidentiality of prisoner records and all police operations.
- Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED. (Proof of education must be uploaded with application).
- Must meet Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) and Melbourne Police Department background investigation requirement and maintain compliance throughout employment.
- Training or college-level coursework in law enforcement, criminal justice, or a related field.
- One (1) year of experience in law enforcement, corrections or other public safety environment.
- Florida certified corrections officer.

- Knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures used during prisoner booking procedures.
- Knowledge of record-keeping and reporting techniques.
- Interpersonal skills, such as tact, patience, and courtesy.
- Operation of a computer and assigned software.
- Ability to perform all aspects of prisoner bookings.
- Ability to safely handle prisoners in a variety of circumstances.
- Ability to learn and follow state, county, and city laws and ordinances.
- Ability to learn and apply police department policies and procedures.
- Ability to maintain records and prepare clear and concise reports.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to understand and work within the scope of authority.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
- Ability to perform duties requiring some physical endurance
- Ability to learn to administer first aid and CPR as necessary
- Ability to access, navigate, utilize, and search databases
- Ability to adhere to attendance requirements.
- Ability to see, read, hear, write and speak the English language.
- Ability to analyze information and formulate decisions.
- Ability to lift up to 20 lbs. to and from overhead level.
- Ability to use hands, wrists, and fingers as used to operate a computer keyboard.
- Ability to sit or stand for up to two (2) hours at one time.
