Description

Under the supervision of a Wastewater Collections Foreman and/or crew leader, performs semi-skilled manual labor in the maintenance and/or replacement of sewer collection systems, using a variety of hand tools, power tools, and equipment. May require large truck and light equipment operation.

Due to the nature of Wastewater Collection systems it may be necessary at times to work through normal lunch and break periods if system customers are without sewer service. However, these periods will be allowed either after sewer service is restored or within an acceptable time frame as determined by job foreman. It may also be required at times to work unscheduled overtime in order to restore sewer service. Performs other tasks as requested.


Examples of Duties

  • Dig up and backfill sewer laterals and sewer mains for location, maintenance and/or repair.
  • Clean and restore job site to original condition. This may include placing sod, raking and other landscape type jobs.
  • Clean and maintain order in utility yard and shop area.
  • Clean and maintain grounds and paint lift stations, valve vaults and other type areas as directed.
  • Work as member of repair and/or maintenance crew as directed.
  • Clean and maintain vehicle and equipment as directed.
  • Work within confined spaces such as sewer manholes and lift station wetwells as required.
  • Perform interior maintenance in lift stations and wetwells as directed.
  • Drive and assist in the operation of sewer Jet-Vac truck.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:

  • High School diploma or G.E.D required. (Proof of education must be uploaded with application)
  • At least three (3) month's experience in the construction, repair and maintenance of sewer collection systems.

Licenses, Certifications or Registrations:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement. . Applicants who do not currently possess a Class "B" CDL with air brake endorsement must acquire a learner's permit within 3 months of hire and obtain the license within 6 months of hire. Applicants who possess a valid out of state driver’s license must obtain a Florida Driver’s license within 10 days of employment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Basic knowledge and skill in the use of hand tools such as shovel, rake, pry bar, wrenches, etc. as required in sewage collection system work.
  • General knowledge of occupational safety rules and regulations as they relate to sewage collection systems.
  • Knowledge and skill to operate computers, work order preventative maintenance software to include Word, Excel, email and internet.
  • Ability to navigate and maneuver through the City's web based GIS mapping system.
  • Ability and skill in the operation of portable power tools.
  • Ability to perform strenuous work in a variety of outdoor weather conditions.
  • Ability to operate large trucks and other equipment such as cement mixers, air compressors, blowers, pumps, etc.

Physical and Mental Requirements:
  • Ability to read and comprehend work orders, equipment/tool manuals, safety manuals, and other printed and/or written material as it relates to the job.
  • Ability to understand and comprehend area maps as they relate to the location of sewer mains, valves, lift station, and manholes.
  • Ability to understand and comprehend basic math. Read, understand and utilize tape measurer.
  • Ability to identify and comprehend colors as they relate to traffic and/or road signs, safety equipment, utility markings, and other utility related materials.
  • Ability to hear and understand instructions given in the English language and spoken in a normal tone of voice. Hear basic instructions, approaching heavy equipment and/or verbal warnings given by co-workers while working in immediate vicinity of heavy equipment that is in operation or other noisy environments.
  • Ability to verbally communicate with co-workers and others in the English language both face-to-face and over two way radio.
  • Ability to write up work orders, warehouse material requisitions, and vehicle service forms in a legible and understandable manner.
  • Ability to manually use shovel, wrenches, pick, rake, and other related hand tools in the efficient excavation, repair, backfilling, and subsequent area restoration of sewer mains, valves, manholes, and service laterals.
  • Ability to set up and operate pneumatic drive jack hammer, gas and/or hydraulic powered portable says, pumps, and other associated tools that weigh between 25 lbs. and 100 lbs.
  • Ability to work in and efficiently move between standing, bending, kneeling, sitting, and/or squatting positions. May be required at times to move laterally and/or work in such positions for extended periods or walk up to one mile in distance during line locations.
  • Ability to lift and carry (up to 100 yds.) items weighing up to 75 lbs. Carry such items over uneven terrain. Load into and unload such items from vehicles. Carry and/or lower into and remove such items from ditch and/or manhole.
  • Ability to assist in the loading and unloading of sewer pipe and fittings up to 30" in diameter.
  • Ability to mix concrete and work in areas with concrete dust, dirt and other unpleasant surroundings.
  • Ability to handle and work around liquid de-greasers and other solvents.
  • Ability to lift and carry items which are considered hard to grasp and or hold on to. Hold items weighing up to 20 lbs. for extended periods. Walk over and around cluttered work areas and uneven services. Climb up and down ladders and/or steps. Set up and work from ladders and scaffolding. Work while standing on uneven and/or wet surfaces.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces such as small above ground lift station structures, underground or "can" type lift stations, lift station wetwells, lift station valve vaults, sewer manholes and excavated hole/ditches. At times such work may continue for extended periods.
  • Ability and willingness to work in confined spaces that have toxic atmospheres while wearing life line connected safety harness and/or self contained breathing apparatus.
  • Ability to work in and around raw sewage while wearing protective gear.
  • Ability to work during night and/or early morning hours or for extended periods when required.
  • Ability to work and perform manual labor for extended periods in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to perform periodic heavy labor as required.
  • Ability to maintain a professional attitude while working in close proximity with others in confined spaces and/or under situations of duress.
  • Ability to enter and leave excavated work sites by way of steep incline and/or ladder.
  • Ability to receive instructions and constructive criticism form departmental management.
