What are the responsibilities and job description for the Equipment Operator I - Golf position at City of Melbourne?
Under general supervision of the Golf Course Superintendent and/or Maintenance Crew Leader, performs semi-skilled manual labor and operates a variety of light and moderately heavy equipment in the maintenance and repair of golf courses, grounds, and other City property as designated. Works independently or in teams. Performs other work as required.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
- Operates and maintains the entire inventory of automotive and maintenance vehicles, power and hand tools, including but not limited to: power tools, greens mowers, fairway mowers, 5-gang rough unit, rotary mowers, tractors, sand trap rake, utility trucks, golf carts, aerators, top dresser, front-end loader, backhoe, turf sweeper, blower, sprayer, trucks, chainsaws, weed eaters, slope mower, and other related equipment.
- Assists the Golf Course Mechanic in preventive maintenance of equipment, to include cleaning, lubrication and checking fluid levels.
- Performs a wide range of laboring tasks as designated under the category of Maintenance Worker I, including those specific to golf course operation, i.e. mowing grass (greens/fairways/roughs/tee’s), applying chemicals including fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, bunker work, cart path edging, changing cup placements, changing tee placements, irrigation repair, laying sod, landscaping beds, spreading mulch and shell, repairing fences and other ancillary items, and tree trimming.
- High school diploma or G.E.D. (Proof of education must be uploaded with application)
- Minimum of 1 year experience in semi-skilled manual labor at a golf course and in the use and operation of vehicles and equipment.
- Must have a valid State of Florida Driver's license. Applicants who possess a valid out of state driver’s license must obtain the Florida driver’s license within 10 days of employment.
- Knowledge of occupational safety rules and practices.
- Knowledge of operation and routine maintenance of moderately heavy equipment.
- Skill in the operation of equipment in rough, uneven, or slippery ground conditions.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to perform strenuous work in all weather conditions.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
- Ability to operate motor vehicles (i.e. pickup trucks, vans, etc.), load or unload vehicles with objects weighing no more than 50 lbs. without assistance.
- Ability to hear, speak and understand conversation in English in a normal tone of voice.
- Use of senses which include sight, smell, hearing and touch as aids in the evaluation and troubleshooting of malfunctioning equipment.
- Ability to see, read and comprehend letters, numbers, words, characters, or symbols which are both large and small, as well as identify colors.
- Ability to print and draw letters, numbers, words, characters, and symbols which are legible and understood by others.
- Ability to use small hand tools which require the use of hands, wrists, and fingers.
- Ability to move back and forth and sideways while in a bending, kneeling, or squatting position.
- Ability to stay in a bending, kneeling, or squatting position for periods less than 10 minutes.
- Ability to go from a standing or sitting position to a bending, kneeling, or squatting position, or vice-versa, periodically.
- Ability to learn complex tasks and remember how to complete tasks without assistance once trained.
- Ability to walk, stand, and sit for periods longer than 30 minutes but not to exceed 8 hours consecutively.
- Ability to walk continuously for more than 5 minutes at a time throughout the working day.
- Ability to lift, carry, push and pull items which weigh up to 50 lbs. without assistance over uneven terrain, up/down stairs or ladders.
- Ability to carry items for a distance which ranges from 10 feet to no more than 300 yards.
- Ability to lift and/or carry items which are considered awkward to grasp or hold on to.
- Ability to lift items (weighing less than 40 pounds) above the head or down from over the head.
