What are the responsibilities and job description for the HVAC Technician position at City of Melbourne?
Under the general supervision of the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor, performs technical work of average difficulty in inspecting, installing, repairing and maintaining HVAC systems and equipment. Incumbent also provides some HVAC design work for other City departments as called upon. Duties require skilled technical examination, and application of standard trade practices. Work is accomplished with little direct supervision. Work is reviewed through written and oral reports and occasional re-inspections. Performs other work as required.
- Installs, maintains, and repairs and performs preventative maintenance on all City-owned HVAC and chiller systems; ensures that mechanical systems and control panels are safe and operable within code standards.
- Responds to trouble calls as needed to make HVAC repairs; determines cause of problems; identifies needed materials and equipment to perform tasks.
- Operates computer- controlled building automation system.
- Uses a variety of electronic testing equipment to ensure accuracy of diagnosis and repair; maintains simple activity records and completes job orders; maintains equipment and tools in working orders.
- Reads schematic diagrams as needed to ensure proper installations and operations of all AC units.
- Reads, interprets, and applies National Electric Code, UL, fire and life safety codes. Consults code officials when necessary.
- Purchases and obtains parts and materials.
- Lifts and installs heavy motors, condensing units and compressors as needed.
- Works on starters and motors for air compressors.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- High School graduate, GED, or equivalent certificate of competency required.
- Must have 3 years of progressively responsible experience in HVAC commercial construction and maintenance work, some years of which should have been at a journeyman level and include both maintenance and construction.
- Must hold a HVAC certification from a technical college or possess a Brevard County Journeyman certification.
- A Universal CFC Certification is required.
- Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Class E driver’s license. Applicants who possess a valid out of state driver’s license, must obtain the Florida Class E license within 10 days of Employment
- Knowledge of principles and practices of the HVAC trade.
- Knowledge of methods, tools, and materials in the repair and maintenance of air conditioning and chiller systems and pumps.
- Working knowledge of computers and P.C. based energy management systems.
- Knowledge of safety precautions common to mechanical work.
- Ability to diagnose AC problems and determine the time and materials required to cause the repair.
- Ability to read electrical diagrams and to follow written and oral directions.
- Ability to direct the work activities of an assistant on-site.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the public.
- Skill in the use of electronic testing equipment and tools.
- Ability to operate various city equipment such as a trenching machine, aerial truck and boom, grinder and miscellaneous power tools.
- Ability to work from a ladder or bucket truck.
- Ability to work regularly scheduled hours.
- Ability to work overtime as directed.
- Ability to hear and comprehend conversation spoken at various levels and rates of speed.
- Ability to see, read and comprehend communication in English.
- Ability to print and use cursive writing; write and draw letters, words, characters and symbols.
- Ability to learn and remember simple and complex tasks and perform job requirements with limited direction.
- Ability to walk, stand or sit for periods to exceed 30 minutes but not to exceed 8 hour consecutively.
- Ability to climb ladders and/or stairs several times throughout a working day.
- Ability to lift, carry, push or pull items which weigh up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to lift and carry objects above head.
- Ability to hold items for a period not to exceed 10 minutes without putting them down.
- Ability to push or pull items for distances not to exceed 20 feet; distance may be level, inclining or declining.
