What are the responsibilities and job description for the School Crossing Guard position at City of Melbourne?
Under the direct supervision of the Community Services Supervisor, is responsible for the safe and orderly crossing of school-age children at their assigned location. Work is performed under direct supervision and in accordance with established rules and procedures. Advice and assistance are available in unusual situations. Work is reviewed through inspection. Performs other work as required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Provides assistance to children crossing streets and highways to and from schools.
- Maintains order by directing children to proper crossing areas and encourages behavior conducive to safe travel.
- Provides other assistance to children as needed.
- Is attentive to situations and/or conditions that could be potentially hazardous to pedestrians and/or motorists, and reports these conditions to the appropriate agency.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
- Provides other assistance to children as needed.
- Maintains equipment in a state of good appearance and repair.
- Maintains a high visibility to the public in order to make them conscious of their driving conflict.
- Must be at least 18 years of age or older.
- No training and experience prerequisites are required to obtain this position. See certification requirements below.
- Must be certified by the State of Florida as a School Crossing Guard prior to working as a School Crossing Guard. Certification must be earned within two weeks of employment.
- Must be certified as a Traffic Enforcement Officer prior to working in traffic control. Certification must be earned within two weeks of employment.
- Ability to learn and be certified in laws pertaining to pedestrian and traffic movement from the Florida Crossing Guard Guidelines
- Ability to learn and be certified in basic traffic signal operation from the Florida Crossing Guard Guidelines.
- Ability to learn and be certified in basic traffic control principles.
- Ability to work with a degree of independence.
- Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies, and to execute duties firmly, tactfully, and impartially.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relation- ships with children, law enforcement officers, and the general public.
- Ability to maintain yearly School Crossing Guard certification as required by Florida Department of Transportation using the Florida Crossing Guard Guidelines.
- Observe children approaching crossing.
- Observe the traffic and crosswalk signal.
- Clearly speak the English language and be able to inform children when to cross street.
- Hear spoken words clearly.
- Observe motorists and make sure they observe the school crossing guard.
- Grasp stop sign and hold overhead.
- Walk into street for visibility to motorists.
- Stand for extended periods of time, up to two and one-half hours.
- Step up and down 6" curb.
- Work outside in all weather conditions and elements.
- Know when traffic signal is red, yellow, or green.
- Push by hand pedestrian button.
