What are the responsibilities and job description for the Deputy Fire Chief position at City of Meriden?
This is responsible administrative and technical work in assisting the Chief in the direction of all personnel and activities of the municipal Fire Department.
Work involves responsibility for the protection of life and property from fires through the direction of all firefighting activities when the Fire Chief is not at the scene. Administrative duties consist of assisting the Chief in making recommendations for purchases of supplies and equipment, assisting in preparation of the budget estimates, and assisting the Chief in effecting efficient use of personnel and equipment used in carry out firefighting activities.
The incumbent assists the Chief in operational decisions pertaining to necessary training programs within the limitations of the laws, regulations, and established policies. Work is performed under the general direction of the Chief; however, the employee works independently in supervision of all personnel in the Fire Department. Work is reviewed primarily through results achieved and through conferences and discussions with the Fire Chief. This is highly responsible constructive work in directing the municipal Fire Department operation.
When directed by the Fire Chief the incumbent, will act in the capacity as the Fire Chief.
Examples of Work
· Assists the Fire Chief in the planning, organizing, assigning and directing departmental operations with the respect to equipment, apparatus and personnel.
· Provides for the supervision of a comprehensive, uniform training program for all fire fighting personnel.
· With Fire Chief, ascertains advantageous location of firefighting equipment at schools, churches, homes, and all places of public assembly.
· Responds to all major fires, and personally directs all fire fighting activities, when the Chief is absent, through sub-ordinate officers.
· Attends conferences, fire conventions, and other educational meetings to keep abreast of modern fire fighting methods and administration.
· Addresses civic and other groups regarding the activities and programs of the Fire Department to explain and promote public understanding of its work when assigned by the Chief.
· Performs related work as required.
Desirable Knowledge, Abilities and Skills
· Thorough knowledge of principles, practices, procedures and equipment used in modern firefighting, in the protection of life and property from fire.
· Thorough knowledge of the uses and limitations of the various types of apparatus and equipment used by the Fire Department and other operational and maintenance requirements.
· Thorough knowledge of effective methods of planning, training, assigning and directing personnel and equipment for the most efficient use for small as well as large or complex and dangerous fires.
· Thorough knowledge of recent developments, current literature and sources of information in municipal fire administration.
· Ability to plan, install, and carry out programs of fire personnel training and fire prevention.
· Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, orally and in writing to groups and to individuals.
· Ability to develop and maintain effective working relations with associates, subordinates, and the public.
· Ability to plan, supervise and coordinate the work of sub ordinates and maintain effective working relationships with officials and the general public.
· Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies and to direct the work of subordinates in emergency situations.
Experience and Training
· More than 15 years of firefighting and/or fire prevention work.
· College degree in fire administration or related field preferred. Experience may substitute for education.
· Education should besupplemented by a completion of approved training in Fire Department administration, operation, inspection and prevention.
· Seven plus years of fire service supervisory experience in a career fire department, including experience in an instructive capacity.
· Participation in special courses such as thoseoffered by theNational Fire Academy or the Connecticut State Fire Academy, Fire Officer 3 preferred
· EMT certified or above
· As a condition of continued employment, must have and maintain a valid Connecticut driver’s license.
