Position Summary
The City Engineer reports directly to a Deputy City Manager and leads a team of professional and para-professional personnel including Registered Professional Engineers, Registered Landscape Architects, Registered Architects, Engineering and Architectural Designers, and Engineering and Architectural CADD Technicians, Licensed Real Estate Agents. Together this team manages the design and construction of Mesa's infrastructure projects, including the procurement of these services. Projects fall into a variety of categories, including Airport Facilities; All City-Owned Buildings (offices, libraries, public safety, etc.); Developer Projects (City Share exceeding $100,000); Natural Gas System Facilities; Electric Power Supply Facilities; Parks & Recreation Facilities; Special Improvement Districts; Street Transportation Facilities; Wastewater System Facilities; Water System Facilities.
The Department also coordinates with private developers and other entities, such as non-city utilities, to ensure that our infrastructure is built to Mesa standards and the land and rights of way are used for the benefit of the public. Furthermore, the City Engineer oversees the Real Estate division, which manages the City's portfolio of real estate and oversees both the sale and purchase of real estate on behalf of the city.
As the Department Director, the City Engineer leads a team of 110 FTE's and sets the long-term strategic plan of the Department, and the execution of both short- and long-range goals and objectives, advocates for and drives innovation and efficiency through partnering with City departments. This individual ensures the coordination of all engineering functions for City capital projects, management of the real estate services functions, and management of private work in the right of way. This individual is responsible for aligning the Department's objectives and programs with City objectives and strategies and engaging City leadership and other Department directors in project delivery. The City Engineer will be responsible for assessing workforce needs and succession planning in the department.

Qualifications
A Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or related field from an accredited four-year college or university required. Must be registered in the State of Arizona as a Civil Engineer or acceptable related engineering field within six months of hire date and possess a valid Arizona Driver’s License by hire date. A minimum of seven years of experience managing Engineering operations of multiple disciplines concurrently, including progressively responsible managerial, supervisory, and administrative experience.

The compensation and benefits package will be competitive and negotiable depending on the experience and qualifications of the chosen candidate. The starting salary range for this position is $158,828 – $212,284 annually depending on qualifications.
