Job Description:
The Victim Advocate/Service Coordinator is responsible for providing informed advocacy services to victims of crime in applying for protection orders, court accompaniment, and support throughout prosecution. The Advocate will also provide information and facilitate access to resources, safety assessments, and safety planning services.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as a representative of the City of Mesquite, demonstrating a positive attitude and progressive actions through the display of professionalism, courtesy, and appropriate tact and discretion in all interactions with other employees and with the public.
- Provide liaison and coordinate between the Mesquite Police Department, City Attorney's office, and community resources.
- Contact victims and provide emotional support, guidance, information on criminal justice procedures, transportation, referral, and advocacy services to victims and the non-offending family members.
- Assist victims with filling out protective orders, Victim Compensation Forms, and other related paperwork.
- Accompanies victims to any court proceeding and to all interviews with prosecutors and defense attorneys or investigators.
- Consults with the City Attorney's office in regard case dynamics.
- Develop safety plans for victims based on initial and ongoing risk assessments.
- Maintain case records and prepare required reporting documents; track case status, case management, write reports, and other reporting as relevant.
- Collect and prepare monthly statistics for grant and research reporting.
- Participate and conduct activities such as trainings, consultation, and in community based committees or activities that relate to the essential functions.
- Educate and create community awareness about domestic violence, sexual assault, and new services being provided.
- Assist the City in overall service delivery by performing other administrative duties as delegated or required.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university preferred with an emphasis on social work or psychology.
- Experience with providing victims of crime with advocacy or providing advocacy service for victims.
- Familiarity with computer applications involving Google Docs, Word, Excel, Adobe, Data entry and/or standard report generation.
- Knowledge of victim's rights, record keeping principles and practices, prioritizing tasks, track and monitoring funds, correct business English, including spelling, grammar and punctuation, safe work practices.
