Position: Sanitation Worker FLSA Status:

Job Summary:

Skilled to semi-skilled in the care and operation of refuse collection vehicle which is used to collect refuse, recyclables, and trash. Work is performed under the supervision of the

Public Works Superintendent.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

• Operates lifts and dumps refuse into refuse collection vehicle.
• Exercises appropriate safety precautions while vehicle is in operation.
• Completes designated refuse route.
• Performs daily inspection of vehicle.
• Performs work found in the Maintenance worker classification.
• Picks up trash and puts in truck.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Knowledge of operation, maintenance, capability's limitations, and safety aspects of refuse collection vehicle. Ability to Lift, squat, bend over, climb up and down off the trash truck.
• Ability to communicate well with others.
• Ability to interpret written and/or oral instructions and reports.
• Acceptable eyesight and hearing. (With or without correction)
• May require lifting and carrying up to 100 pounds.
• Climbing, walking, depth perception, sitting, and good balance.

Education and/or Training:

• High school diploma or equivalency diploma.
• One (1) year experience in operation of heavy truck and equipment preferred.

• Must possess a valid Florida driver's license with a driving record acceptable to the City's driving policy and insurance program.

Community Relations Functions:

• Must be able to interact and communicate with public.
• Ability to conduct yourself appropriately in public.
• Handle customer complaints about refuse collection.

Licenses, Certifications or Registrations:

• Valid Florida driver’s License, (class to be determined upon employment).

Work Environment:

• Work is primarily outdoor exposure to weather and field conditions.
• Works outside in various weather conditions with dust, fumes, gases, chemicals, oils, uneven surfaces, poor lighting, vibrations.
• Exposure to extreme noise, odors, dust, heights, and irate customers.
• Exposure to hazardous chemicals, heavy equipment, moving machinery.
• This position may require the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and may require the ability to pass a medical evaluation.

Tools and Equipment:

• Ability to operate saws (both hand and power), various hand tools, shovels, rakes.

Supervision Received and Exercised:

• This position reports to Public Works Superintendent.

Pay Grade: 101

Essential Physical Skills:

• Heavy lifting, reaching, pulling, walking, standing, bending, stooping. Acceptable hearing and vision, equipment operation
