Nature of Work

This position supervises and participates in activities at a community or recreation center or playground.

Illustrative Examples of Essential Duties

  • Directs the activities of an assigned recreation center, playground, or community center.
  • Provides input regarding the planning, scheduling, organizing, and directing of City-wide recreation programs.
  • Attends parent meetings.
  • Assists in the scheduling of activities.
  • Collects monies for various recreational functions.
  • Compiles and maintains necessary records.
  • Assists in planning and scheduling programs for various civic organizations.
  • Organizes and participates in the staging of amateur programs.
  • Sets up and takes down apparatus for activities.
  • Prepares and arranges exhibits.
  • Recommends necessary supplies and equipment purchases.
  • Assists patrons in various tasks.
  • Assists in maintaining order at functions.
  • Inspects assigned areas and reports conditions needing repairs.
  • Operates sound, video and lighting equipment.
  • Maintains records of revenues and receipts.
  • Resolves complaints and inquiries from the public.
  • Instructs in various recreational activities.
  • Inventories and maintains equipment and supplies.
  • Solicits and collects sponsorships for athletic programming.
  • Coordinates and supervises field trips.
  • Creates advertising materials, including flyers, posters, and postcards.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • Associates Degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, or in a course of study related to the occupational field. Experience may substitute on a year for year basis.
  • One (1) to three (3) years of experience relevant to the major duties / essential functions of the position. Part-time experience will be prorated.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the State of Florida for the type of vehicle or equipment operated with an acceptable driving record.
  • DCF 40-hour Childcare Facility Training Requirement started within first 90 days of employment and must be completed one (1) year from the date the training began.
  • City will pay for the DCF 40-hour childcare requirements and testing a maximum of 3 takes
  • CPR and First Aid certifications must be obtained within 6 months of hire.
  • Applicant must be able to work at various locations and varying shifts, holidays, weekends, and evening hours.
  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact.
  • Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to, computers, computer software, calculator, copiers, and fax machine.
  • Significant standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, some crawling, reaching, handling, sitting, standing, pushing, and pulling.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with elected officials, coworkers, the press the general public and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability, political affiliation, gender identity or sexual orientation.
  • Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of all city ethics and conflicts of interest policies. Strong understanding of ethical behavior is required.
  • Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • Reports to work as directed during an emergency as an essential employee of the City of Miami Beach.

    Benefits are available to FULL-TIME employees only. The City of Miami Beach offers a comprehensive benefits package, including 12 vacation, 12 sick days, 15 paid holidays (11 holidays and 4 floating holidays); partially sponsored by the City group medical (including visual) and dental insurance, life insurance. Excellent retirement plan : pre-tax employee contribution added to the City's contribution; 5 year "cliff vesting."

    Voluntary Benefits (fully paid by the employee, but payroll deductible) : flexible spending account; 457 Deferred Compensation Plan, and Roth IRA; universal and critical life insurance, disability insurance, long-term care, and lump sum cancer policy. Also, U.S. Legal Services, tuition assistance, pre-tax payroll contributions, continuation of medical and dental coverage up to 18 months upon termination (COBRA).
