What are the responsibilities and job description for the Commission Aide position at City of Miami Beach?
This position provides advanced and professional legislative / administrative work for a City Commissioner.
- Briefs the Commissioner on issues appearing on City Commission and Commission Committee agendas.
- Provides critical analyses of policy and legislation.
- Collaborates with the City Administration and the City Attorneys to draft proposed legislation and projects.
- Conducts research and policy analyses to assist.
- Tracks, monitors, and analyzes new legislative proposals and prepares legislative summaries to inform the Commissioner.
- Maintains awareness of county, state, and national policy that may have impacts on the City of Miami Beach.
- Researches and composes reports on legislative issues.
- Initiates and directs research and special studies and projects in needed areas, as assigned.
- Confers with department and division heads, other agencies, and organizations such as City Manager, executive staff, and City Attorney staff.
- Attends City Commission meetings, committee meetings, neighborhood association meetings, and other activities as assigned.
- Completes special projects as needed.
- Review and respond and make recommendations concerning incoming correspondence, memoranda, reports, and similar material.
- Represents the City Commissioner before committees, citizen groups, and/or other agencies.
- Prepares letters, summaries, reports, and informational memoranda on committee issues.
- May perform other related duties as assigned, such as scheduling and attending community events.
- Knowledge of research techniques and available sources of current information in the area of assignment.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of modern office practices.
- Knowledge of public relations principles and practices.
- Knowledge of City government, organization, and operations.
- Considerable knowledge of Business English, Spelling and Business Arithmetic.
- Considerable knowledge of office procedures, practices, processes, systems.
- Ability to exercise judgment and discretion in devising, installing and/or interpreting City rules, regulations, policies or procedures.
- Ability to carry out complex verbal, written instructions, and complete work independently.
- Ability to express ideas and information clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to discern and extract pertinent facts from verbal and written guidelines, policies, and procedures, and apply these to a variety of problems.
- Analysis skills required including an ability to collect and analyze data.
- Ability to perform highly detailed work under strict deadlines and produce quality work under pressure.
- Highly organized.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and trust in a sensitive work environment.

- Performs related work as required
- Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, or in a course of study related to the occupational field. Experience may substitute on a year for year basis.
- One (1) to three (3) years of experience relevant to the major duties/essential functions of the position. Part-time experience will be prorated.

- The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while standing or walking.
- The employee occasionally lifts light objects.
- The work is typically performed in an office.
