General Description

Perform landscaping duties, such as mowing, edging, weeding, spraying, hedge trimming, watering, cleaning, restoration planting, transporting, fertilizing of shrubs, plants and trees. Operate general lawn equipment.

Essential Job Functions

This is not intended as a comprehensive list; it is intended to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may be required to perform all duties listed, and may be required to perform additional, position-specific tasks.

Participates in landscaping and maintenance of beautified areas where tasks may include : picking up trash, raking leaves, mowing, edging, weeding, spraying, hedge trimming, watering, cleaning, restoration, cutting, planting, transplanting, and fertilizing trees, shrubs, flowers and plants.

Operates tractors, bush hogs, batwings, front cutters, power mowers, chainsaws, blowers, edgers, sprayers and other equipment.

Participates in special functions such as bleacher movement, activities setup and demolition, and community projects.

Maintains and repairs facilities and playground equipment, including : pressure washing building interiors, exteriors and outside areas such as tennis courts, basketball courts, and bleachers.

Applies pesticides and insecticides to trees, shrubs, grasses, flowers and plants to combat insects, fungi, parasites and other pests.

Assists in storing, moving and securing of parks and equipment.

Prepares reports and completes other forms and reports related to equipment and work performed.

Performs related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :

Knowledge of the methods, tools and practices used in the planting, transplanting, digging and cultivation of plants, shrubs, flowers, grasses and trees. Knowledge of the methods and practices of treating plants and trees for fungi, insects, parasites and diseases peculiar to subtropical climates. Knowledge of the practices and techniques used in maintenance and repair of equipment typically used in parks systems. Knowledge of the operating characteristics and maintenance requirements of equipment used in landscape work. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions in park equipment and landscape maintenance.

Skill in the use of landscape tools and equipment.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, other departments and the public. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to keep records and prepare routine reports. Ability to recognize plant, tree and grass diseases and pests. Ability to lift 50 pounds and physical agility sufficient to perform assigned duties.

Education & Experience Requirements :

Graduation from high school or equivalent; plus one (1) year experience in landscaping. Varied shift and week-end shift required. Must be able to lift / move up to 50 pounds. Required to possess and maintain a valid Florida Drivers License.

The noise level in the work environment is moderately quiet. Work is performed in the field sometimes under adverse weather conditions.

Benefits are available to FULL-TIME employees only.

The City of Miami Gardens offers a comprehensive benefits package, including 176 hours of Personal Time Off (PTO) in lieu of vacation and sick time and 12 paid holidays (11 holidays and 1 floating holiday).

The City participates in the retirement plan administered by the Florida Retirement System (FRS), which requires a mandatory 3% contribution.
