Responsible work in directing and assisting with the planning, management and maintenance of a park or parks dedicated to the conservation and care of City of Miami Natural Areas for the Parks & Recreation Department.


Work involves the responsibility for the care and maintenance of a park or parks dedicated essentially to the growth and development of South Florida native plants, shrubs and flowers. Work requires a knowledge of floriculture of South Florida, as well as habitat restoration, conservation, and preservation methods. The incumbent is required to have knowledge of South Florida plants, their identifying technical names and methods of propagation, treatment, and care. An incumbent will host and conduct educational and interpretive programming. General supervision is received from the Senior Park Naturalist or designee.

Assists with conducting site condition inspections for ensuring compliance with grant and DERM requirements of restored and environmentally protected City of Miami parks land. Reports on inspections and any environmental impacts of restoration projects.


Assists with training and assigning work to crew responsible for exotic removal and reforestation programs, clean-up of area, and chemical control with prepared work plans and site maps. Prepares daily reports pertaining to field assignments and chemicals used.


Ensures herbicide chemicals for plant and weed control are properly mixed and used by crew and specialized spraying equipment is maintained and operated correctly.


Applies for and tracks the progress of regulatory agency permits regarding mangrove and tree mitigation.


Assists with the preparation of grant reports & the compliance of awarded grants.


Grants permission for use of park property by garden clubs, civic or other groups.  Secures, when requested, guest speakers for meetings.


Conducts periodic tours of the park for special groups, weekend volunteer events and for general visitors, explaining the nature of plant growth, technical names of plants, shrubs and trees, and propagation requirements.


Collects data on plant species at parks and other environmental activities via handheld equipment and computer software. 


Assists Senior Park Naturalist or designee in managing crews engaged in planting, cleaning, pruning and clearing of paths in the park area and in custodial duties of the facility.


Inspects Natural Areas for hazardous structural tree conditions and creates mitigation plans to minimize tree failure and ensure safe visitor conditions.


Supervises the installation of trail-side museums and displays the propagation and re-establishment of native material within the park for use in other parks and public areas.


Polices the park for evidence of fires or vandalism, and inspects park for needed repairs, removal or replanting of trees, shrubs, flowers and plants.


Assists with coordinating various volunteer workdays throughout the year for beach and natural areas clean-ups, habitat restoration, tree plantings, nursery care, etc.


Works with outside entities, vendors, and contractors in restoration, replanting and conservation efforts. Ensures work is completed according to scope and in compliance with guidelines and applicable regulations.


Assists with the preparation of the division budget for programs, maintenance, equipment, supplies, etc. Monitors inventory and ensures maximum delivery of services within allocated resources.


Performs other related work as required.

A minimum of 60 college credits and two (2) years experience as a Naturalist, Botanist, Horticulturalist or in propagation of native material or forestry. 


A Valid Driver's License from any state (Equivalent to a State of Florida Class E) may be utilized upon application, however prior to appointment a State of Florida Driver's License (Class E or higher) must be presented to the Department of Human Resources and must be maintained valid throughout employment.


OR


Equivalent combination of education and experience beyond a high school diploma or its equivalent and two (2) years of the required experience.



SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 

A valid certification from the International Society of Arboriculture as a Certified Arborist must be obtained within the first three (3) months of employment in the classification and must be maintained valid throughout employment in the classification.


A Pesticide Public Applicator License in the categories of Natural Areas, Ornamental & Turf, and Aquatic must be obtained within the first three (3) months of employment in the classification and must be maintained valid throughout employment in the classification.


NOTE:

Candidates will be subject to a Level II background screening.

1.   Proof of education in the form of 60 college credits.

Foreign diplomas/degrees must be submitted with a credential evaluation report from an approved credential evaluation agency*.Translations of diploma/degrees are not accepted. If degree/diploma does not reflect the academic major on its face, transcripts must be submitted. If submitting transcripts the following must included: student's name, school name, number of credits, degree completion, and major.  Audit/Academic reports are not accepted as substitutions for college transcripts.

To qualify under the equivalency clause, applicants must provide proof of education in one or more of the following applicable forms: copy of high school diploma or equivalent, transcript showing at least 60 college credits, Associate's degree, or Bachelor's degree or higher.

*Approved Credential Evaluation Agencies:
Credential evaluation reports showing the United States equivalency for academic credentials earned in other countries may be provided by:
  • An accredited four-year college or university in the United States, OR
  • A current member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES), OR
  • A current member of the Association of International Credential Evaluators (AICE), OR
  • A recognized Professional Organization

2. Copy of valid Driver's License from any state (Equivalent to a State of Florida Class E) may be utilized upon application, however, a State of Florida Driver's License (Class E or higher) is required at time of appointment and must be maintained valid throughout employment.

Selection Preference for City Residents: In accordance with APM 2-02, applicants for classified positions who are City of Miami residents and new hires will receive preference in selection from interview ranking bands provided that any two (2) of the following documents are submitted with the employment application and again at time of interview:

A. Utility bill dated within 60 days of the date of submission
B. Valid Florida Driver License or State-issued I.D.
C. Property Tax Statement dated within 1 year of the date of submission
D. Properly executed valid lease agreement
E. Homestead Exemption dated within 1 year of the date of submission
F. Motor Vehicle Registration dated within 90 days of the date of submission
G. Official school records or transcripts, dated within 90 days of the date of submission
H. W-2 (or 1099) Tax Form dated within 1 year of the date of submission

City of Miami residents are granted selection preference over non-City of Miami residents within the same ranking band resulting from an interview process.


Selection Preference: Selection preference within the same ranking band resulting from an interview process will be granted in the following order: 1) preference eligible veterans, 2) active City of Miami employees, 3) City of Miami residents, 4) all others.
