What are the responsibilities and job description for the Parks - Park Ranger position at City of Middleton?
This is a seasonal position responsible for representing the City of Middleton Parks & Recreation Department in direct contact with the community often requiring independent judgment in difficult situations. Areas of responsibility include customer service, parks rules and city ordinance education, as well as occasional custodial and maintenance work. Work is performed in all types of weather, over varied terrain, and frequently involves varied hours, including evening, holidays, and weekends (work varies considerably based on season). Work is performed independently under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation - Field Services. This position also is responsible for providing visitor's services to park users, including providing first aid. This position involves direct citizen contact, at times under stressful circumstances requiring the ability to mitigate conflict tactfully while maintaining personal and public safety.
- Provide visitor's services to park, conservancy and trails users; answer questions and provide routine customer assistance and information to park users.
- Support shelter rentals and park reservation with facilities services, shelter cleaning, and resolving user conflicts as needed.
- Assist with volunteer management and programming.
- Maintain an accurate log of contacts and actions taken, complete assigned associated reports.
- Communicate with emergency services personnel when necessary and collect all necessary information required for reports and complete as necessary.
- Remove brush and pick up litter, empty trash, and perform minor repairs.
- Identify/report situations requiring corrective actions beyond your means.
- Follow pre-established procedures in preparing reporting.
- Working knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment commonly used in park maintenance work.
- Working knowledge of work hazards and safe work practices.
- Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions.
- Applicant must be at least 18 years of age.
- Applicant should be physically fit.
- Ability to communicate information and provide education related to policy and rules effectively.
- Ability to follow and give oral and written instructions related to public safety and enforcement.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the general public.
- Ability to calmly handle difficult situations while maintaining personal safety.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to maintain adequate attendance during varied work schedules.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and similar programs is required to efficiently communicate.
- Perform related work as assigned.
- General knowledge of technology and software.
- Review protocol manuals and standard operating procedures as assigned.
- Possession of a valid driver's license and ability to meet the transportation requirements of the position.
- Certification in American Red Cross First AID/CPR.
- Completion of DNR UTV/ATV Safety Education Course.
