Summary
The primary purpose of this position is to ensure reliable and efficient sanitary and storm water sewer treatment systems. The incumbent accomplishes this through the operation and maintenance of equipment to properly clean storm/sanitary sewers and open ditches; and by conducting maintenance of plant equipment, collection system equipment, pump stations and vehicles.
The incumbent in this position may be assigned to perform maintenance or operations work in other departments within the City.
Examples of Job Duties
The following is intended as a brief description/illustration of the duties, responsibilities, and requirements of this position and are not intended to be all encompassing or all-inclusive.
1. Maintains and repairs plant equipment, pump stations, sanitary/storm mains and catch basin leads. Assists with fabricating parts to repair pump stations and plant equipment. Refurbishes pumps, motors and other equipment at plant and pump stations.
2. Cleans, inspects and maintains sanitary sewers, storm sewers, catch basins, open drains and pump stations. Inspects and repairs manhole flow channels.
3. Operates a variety of equipment, such as vactor trucks, sewer jet flusher truck, sludge trucks, dump trucks, fork trucks, aerial lifts, pickups and tractors for the purpose of cleaning sanitary and storm sewers, catch basins, culverts, laterals, wastewater process structures, and pumping station wet wells.
4. Conducts removal and delivery of debris, sand, grit, sludge and trash to appropriate destinations.
5. Operates video inspection equipment to troubleshoot problems with sanitary main, storm main, catch basins and leads.
6. Maintains grounds to meet aesthetic, safety and functional standards at various Wastewater locations by operating equipment and performing manual labor. Examples include snow removal, trash removal, lawn and landscaping maintenance.
7. Assists during emergency and flood conditions with all tasks as assigned to restore proper function of the storm and sanitary systems. Must be able to work mandatory overtime with long hours during emergency situations.
8. Assists with preventative maintenance of vehicles and equipment as assigned.
9. Establishes and maintains a safe work zone for all involved employees and contractors. Ensures safety of public around work zones. Focuses on safety when executing all duties of the job. Examples include: properly using PPE, employing safety techniques for work zone safety, creating safe confined space entry, first aid certification, and ability to calibrate and use air monitoring devices.
10. Able to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time.
11. Performs all other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
High school diploma or equivalent; demonstrated working knowledge of related manual labor work and ability to perform heavy physical labor; working knowledge of safe, efficient mechanical operation of various motorized equipment and trucks; ability to work safely in a variety of hazardous conditions and around hazardous materials such as raw sewage, chlorine, methane and ferric chloride; ability to properly follow oral and written instructions and cooperate with others; knowledge of basic mechanical methods and preventative maintenance; knowledge of methods and materials used for municipal infrastructure maintenance; ability to deal tactfully, compassionately and knowledgably with property owners and the public; ability to learn and successfully utilize technology such as computers, software and wireless devices; must be able to work as part of a team; ability to work overtime and emergency situations as directed; must possess and maintain a valid State of Michigan driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
Other Requirements of the Job:
· Must maintain a valid CDL Class A license with air brakes, a tank (N) endorsement, and maintain a good driving record.
· Required to secure and maintain certifications such as confined space, chlorine training, asbestos removal, fork truck and/or aerial lift.
· Must be able to successfully pass City safety and equipment operation training programs as required
· Must be able to work overtime as required to complete services for the residents of Midland.
· Must be able to accept on-call duties and respond to service calls for maintenance issues.
Physical and Mental Demands:
Must be able to perform a wide variety of strenuous physical labor, including constant heavy lifting. Ability to ride and operate machinery for extended periods of time and perform work with repetitive motion. Must be able to use a variety of manual and automated tools/equipment. Must be able to stoop, balance, reach, climb ladders and navigate through uneven terrain. Must be able to work in confined spaces and with heights. Must be able to read and understand directions and safely work with chemicals and a variety of potentially dangerous equipment. Ability to perform basic mathematic computations such as calculating area, volume, etc. Must be able to detect wok area safety hazards visually and by sound.
