SUMMARY OF POSITION: Under the general direction of the Solid Waste Foreman or designee performs semi-skilled work involving the direction of refuse collection and disposal, and other related solid waste services. Operates and maintains, including preventative maintenance, lubing and cleaning of dump trucks and any other types of equipment used in solid waste. Work includes managing a small crew by prioritizing projects, assigning work tasks, using equipment, maintaining records, monitoring work quality and work schedules, ensuring crew safety, training employees, and providing performance feedback. The employee leads and participates in performing various solid waste related maintenance and removal functions and equipment operation. Employee is responsible for procurement of materials, work orders, and record keeping as needed for each assignment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or trade school or a G.E.D. and three (3) years of professional experience in solid waste collection and disposal, including equipment operation with one (1) year of supervisory experience OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience sufficient to indicate ability to perform all aspects of the position.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: At time of application, possession of a valid State of Connecticut Class A or B commercial driver’s license (CDL). Possession of a valid State of Connecticut Certification Application for Operators of Landfills, Transfer Stations, Recycling and Volume Reduction Facilities OR ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
SCOPE OF EXAMINATION: Applicants will be ranked according to their Oral Board Examination score and their training and experience as indicated on Application Supplement.
