Job Description
The city of Minnetonka seeks a Planner with a strong public service focus/orientation. The role of the planner is to respond to public inquiries and land use complaints; enforce zoning ordinances; review permit applications; prepare written staff reports; make regularly scheduled oral presentations to the planning commission; monitor and provide project management for land use applications; conduct research projects; and perform GIS related functions.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Responds to inquiries about land use and zoning matters
- Assists in the interpretation, enforcement, and updating of city ordinances
- Reviews building, grading, and sign permits for compliance with ordinances
- Assists the public through land development procedures
- Researches, writes and presents staff reports to the Planning Commission and City Council, as needed
- Performs pre-site inspections to ensure compliance with code requirements
- Monitor, manage, and guide assigned land use applications
- Permit research and GIS projects
- Perform other duties and assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- A belief in and commitment to the organization’s shared values
- A bachelor's degree in Planning or a related field and One (1) year of responsible, relevant planning experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Experience dealing with land use complaints, and the interpretation and enforcement of zoning ordinances.
- Knowledge and practical experience with GIS
- Valid MN driver's license
- A master’s degree in planning or related field
- Experience in a metropolitan planning office.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge:
- General knowledge of Federal, State, and local building codes and ordinances relating to planning
- General knowledge of all phases of planning; comprehensive plans, zoning and subdivision ordinances
Skills:
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and position-specific software applications
- Practiced in compiling and analyzing technical and statistical information to prepare technical reports
- Proficient in interpreting various rules and regulations
Abilities:
- Ability to communicate ideas, explanations, and recommendations clearly both orally and in writing
- Ability to prepare and present technical information clearly
- Ability to learn City and department policies and procedures
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Ability to follow the organization's shared values
