Job Description
The City of Minnetonka Police Department is seeking dedicated individuals committed to public safety and community service. The tentative start date for this position will be in September 2025.

Minimum Qualifications:
- A commitment to and belief in the organization's shared values.
- Two years of college work is required (90 quarter credits or 60 semester credits) from a regionally accredited college or university AND successfully complete a Minnesota Professional Peace Officer Education (PPOE) program from a POST Board certified school. In addition, must comply with the minimum selection standards of the Minnesota Board of Peace Officers Standards and Training.
- Hold a license issued by or eligible to be licensed by the Minnesota Police Officers Standards and Training Board (P.O.S.T.)
- Possess valid Minnesota driver's license without recent significant traffic violations.
- Successful completion of medical, drug testing, and psychological exams.
- Must supply background information as requested.
- EMR certification

Duties/Responsibilities
Essential Job Functions:
- Enforce federal/state laws and city ordinances.
- Enforce traffic laws and write citations/warnings for moving, mechanical or safety violations.
- Work cooperatively with federal, state, county, and local law enforcement agencies and prosecutors.
- Respond to a wide variety of calls requiring various problem-solving techniques and judgment and appropriate use of force.
- Investigate crimes, traffic accidents, suspicious circumstances and other calls for service gathering evidence and documenting information.
- Direct traffic and assist motorists.
- Place individuals under arrest (search, interview, investigate).
- Assist investigators in follow-up investigations.
- Provide emergency medical service as a first responder at scenes of accidents or crimes.
- Manage crowds at labor disputes, demonstrations, and civil protests.
- Investigate and report public nuisances.
- Appropriately, transport arrested persons, citizens in need of assistance, and citizen ride-along.
- Promote positive department/community relationships participating in crime prevention, education and youth related activities as assigned.
- Appear in court to testify in criminal, traffic and civil trials.
- Process arrested persons through the booking process.
- Perform surveillance on person(s) or places.
- Patrol residential, business, and public areas by vehicle and foot.
- Actively engage in problem solving with residents, business owners and other citizens.
- Serve warrants and subpoenas.
- Participate in both non-emergency and emergency driving.
- Participate in roll calls and department training.
- Process lost/stolen/found property.
Additional Functions for Investigative Assignments:
- Conduct initial and follow-up investigations.
- Apply and execute search warrants, court orders, administrative subpoenas and other investigative orders.
- Complete case investigations and present for prosecution.
- Participate, as assigned, in community/school meetings, investigative exchanges and collaboratives.
Other Job Functions:
- Perform other duties and assumes responsibilities as apparent or assigned.
- Opportunity to participate in various assignments throughout the department such as: case investigator, narcotics investigator, retail investigator, school resources officer, traffic officer, field training officer, bike patrol, canine, emergency response team, crisis negotiator, firearms instructor, use of force instructor, reserve/explorer/chaplain advisor, etc.
Knowledge, Skills and Ability:
Knowledge of:
- State laws and city ordinances.
- Policies, procedures and services of the department.
- Rules of criminal evidence and procedure.
- Knowledge of the functions and jurisdictions of the various county, state and federal law enforcement agencies.
- Effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
- EMR certification with the ability to maintain First Responder certification.
- Deal reasonably with all people in all situations.
- Make sound decisions during the use of force, including the use of deadly force when justified.
Skilled in:
- Word processing and computer usage.
- Organizing and prioritizing work effectively.
- Verbal and written communication skills.
- Problem solving and conflict management.
- Meet physical challenges and be able to perform strenuous duties.
- Demonstrate proficiency and qualify with authorized department firearms.

Additional Information
Compensation: 2025 wages - This is a non-exempt, union position with the following hourly pay range:
$93,254.72(Step 1) - $123.375.20* (Step 4) Annually- With participation in the personal growth incentive program.
Step 4 is achievable after 3 years of service. An additional step (Step 5) is achievable after the 15th year which is $128,223.68 annually. Current labor contract. (Download PDF reader)
